Goals and Ethics Paper

The American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) defines internships as high-impact educational practices that increase academic performance and personal development among undergraduate students (Kopp, 2019). To support genuine learning, student interns are encouraged to engage in goal-setting and personal reflection.

The purpose of this paper is to establish personal goals that will guide your internship experience. There are three parts (described below). Please use APA format for headings and spacing. Cover page and references are not required. Please review the sample Goals and Ethics paper in the Forms and Templates module.

Page 1: Summary of class discussion and materials

In our first class meeting we reviewed several resources:

Class Goals listed in the syllabus (i.e. learn the value of leadership and organizational relationships; apply concepts learned in other courses, etc.)

Page 2: Long and Short Term Goals, SMART Objectives

Use bullet points to summarize the following:

Long Term Career Goals (3-5 years)

This should be a minimum of one goal
Short Term Goals (1-2 years)

This should be a minimum of two goals that support your long term goal
Internship SMART objectives (one semester)

This should be a minimum of four SMART objectives (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-Bound) that support your short term goals
Page 3: Ethics and Values

Please provide a minimum of five bullet points highlighting your values and ethics relevant to your career. These are personal to you, and can include things like how you will manage people, a commitment to honesty and integrity, work life balance, or other non-negotiables that will characterize your work life.

Grading Guidelines (100 points total):

APA format, Spelling, Grammar (20 points maximum)

Be sure to follow APA format and use the spelling and grammar check in Word before submitting your paper
Section 1: Summary of Class Discussion (30 points maximum)

Information from resources discussed in class must be included in summary
Summary must demonstrate personal reflection and application
Section 2: Goals and Objective (30 points maximum)

Required number of goals and objectives must be provided
Internship objectives must follow SMART guidelines
Objectives must realistically support short-term goals; short-term goals must realistically support long-term goal
Section 3: Values and Ethics (20 points maximum)

Required number of values and ethics must be provided
Points should demonstrate quality personal reflection
