Your first paper will be a short (2-3 page) paper in which you connect one of the works that we’ve read prior to the midterm with a contemporary event or person. You’ll need to show how the themes and events of the work are relevant to or shed light on the specific event, or how a particular character helps us better understand a famous person today.
Some examples from past papers include comparisons between The Odyssey and The Princess Bride, Penelope and Ginny Weasley, Odysseus and Rick Sanchez, Achilles and Taylor Swift, Agamemnon and Donald Trump, and Hektor and Martin Luther King. As you can see, there are many possible parallels, so have fun and take chances, but avoid big generalized comparisons, for example, comparing Penelope to women today.
I’m giving you some latitude on this assignment in the hope that you’ll experiment and try different approaches. The recent event can be serious or not so serious, but we need some sense of how the wisdom of the literature can either help us to better understand what happened or even provide a solution. In other words, what central message(s) can we extract from the similar experiences of these characters?
An effective paper will be well written, show a fairly deep and original (beyond SparkNotes) understanding of the work, and analyze as much as it documents. Also, make sure that you support your points with specific examples concerning the event or person and quotations from both the reading and whatever you’re comparing it to.
The format will be double-spaced MLA style, with 12-point Times New Roman.
