The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with a sociological understanding of race and ethnicity and encourage critical reflection as students explore south Asian (Punjabi) racial and ethnic background as a basis for making sense of South Asian (Punjabi) identity, ideologies, and behaviours. Specifically, students must write a personal account of their ideologies about race and ethnicity -what they are and how they were formed as well as if and how they have changed over time and why. Students must link this knowledge to an analysis of how their ideologies about race and ethnicity have shaped how they see themselves (their identify or sense of self) relative to different racial and ethnic groups as well as how this informs their behaviours towards those they view as similar or different from themselves. Pay particular attention to how your ideologies about race and ethnicity shape your understanding of power and privilege. It is important to draw on various sociological perspectives discussed in the first three lessons to produce a well-grounded and comprehensive reflection paper. Papers that fail to cite ideas and information will automatically receive a zero. This paper must NOT exceed 3 double-spaced pages (the three pages does NOT include your work cited and title-pages) Deductions of 5% per page will be applied to papers that exceed specified length. Deductions of 5% per day will be applied to late papers.
