What is a Working Bibliography?
A Working Bibliography is a repository for researchers to keep track of all of the sources they have encountered during the various stages of their research. As the research process begins, it is important for writers to have detailed records of all of the sources they *might* eventually use, as the focus of their projects change and evolve during the drafting stages. What you think might be only tangential to your topic now, could turn out to be vital later on once you learn more about your topic: it may be a critical counter-argument, or a reference to an important historical period, or provide some unique perspective that will help round out your claims. And your Working Bibliography is going to help you remember and locate these sources when the time comes to integrate them into your papers.
It’s something like a detective’s notebook, and each citation is another clue that might help solve the case. And like detective work, at the beginning of your research you are looking for anything that might turn out to be useful, while later on you can be more intentional with your search. So for now look far and wide and don’t leave any stone unturned.
The Assignment
Now that you have selected your topic, begin your Working Bibliography by going backward in time and indexing all of the sources you consulted to help establish your topic and complete your Statement of Topic assignment. Each source will be cited according to MLA format and annotated with a brief note to indicate what information the source contained and how it (potentially) relates to your project. You will be continuously adding to this Working Bib as the quarter goes forward, but for now you should include 5 sources.
A citation in your Working Bib might look like this:
Bostrom, Nick. Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies. 2014. Print.
Book found at UCI library. Discusses AI/singularity. Difficulty of containing AI. “Alignment problem.” Possibility of human/machine merging into hybrid species. Good for moral arguments and thought experiments. Philosophical rather than technical.
