The major elements of Universal Design are Engagement, Representation and Action/ Expression. Engagement is described as the “why” in learning, Representation is describing as the “what” the child is learning, and Action/ Expression is described as the “how” they are learning.
The UDL can be applied to ensure progress of all students, and individuals within both our schools & communities. This helps us as teachers to see what the individual currently still needs to build, access and internalize. This could help us see the skills that they have and what they currently are working on or might need more of for their goals. The principles of UDL impacts our daily lives by comprehension, physical action and self-regulation. Comprehension is important because it helps us process what is being asked of us, keeps us open to opportunities that might come our way and helps us to understand new information to our brains. Physical action helps us in our daily life by keeping us alive by moving to eat, drink or move from place to place. Physical action helps us navigate to where we need to go and move to what’s next. Self-regulation helps us daily to reflect on ourselves to make sure if we are doing okay, and if we aren’t then we think what would be my next step to make sure I feel better about this current situation. Self-regulation helps us sort what is expected from others or ourselves. Comprehension, Physical action, self-regulation are only three of the nine main guidelines that you could look for in an individuals educational path to success. I have to learn both visually and hands on. I learn more with Action/Expression. I can see more traits in myself with expression and communication, physical action, and executive functions like organizing. How do you learn?
When developing goals using the principles of UDL, the teachers should keep in mind the child’s individuality. Each child is different, and some kids will have a variety of strengths and only some weaknesses; some others might have a lot of weaknesses and only some strengths in one category. It is important to not compare the children and to keep these plans as building blocks for each child to have progress in. These guild lines are here to help have a guide to go from and some individuals won’t hit all their marks. That is okay as a teacher to keep working towards those goals and to stay positive with someday achieving those goals into making them into strengths.
