What is the key to understanding the nature of the American presidency?

Consider the various aspects of the American presidency that we have studied this very difficult semester. Drawing on course materials, if you were asked by a foreigner or an American citizen to explain the most significant thing to understand about the American presidency, what would you say? What’s the biggest misunderstanding someone not familiar with the American political system—whether someone from another country or even an American citizen—might have? In other words, to summarize, what is the key to understanding the nature of the American presidency? I will evaluate not what case you make, but rather how well you make your case (including drawing upon course materials).
