Please respond to each of the parts below in complete sentences and in paragraph form as requested (no bullet points, please). Where directed, you must use the musical terms covered by the course so far; spelling of those terms will count toward your grade. Please label each part in your response.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to answer each part completely and clearly—don’t leave out any requested information.
VERY IMPORTANT: This is an open-book test, so you can use your Ebook text as well as the notes and other materials. Do not use any outside sources; any information coming from such sources will not be counted toward your grade.
EXTERMELY IMPORTANT: You must complete this test by yourself. You may not enlist the help of anyone else, neither those in the class nor those without.

PART I: The Geography of Early Music (35 points)

The centers of Western music composition have changed over its history, often times corresponding to the rise and fall of the fortunes of those areas. There are various geographic areas corresponding to modern-day countries in which the seven composers in the Study Pieces list above primarily worked. In a single paragraph, name each composer and give the modern-day country that corresponds to the geographical area in which that composer primarily worked. Be sure to include all seven composers and one country of employment for each.

PART II: Texts and Elements of Music (45 points)

Base your responses for this part on the following pieces:

Hildegard of Bingen: “Alleluia”
Josquin: “Ave Maria”
Purcell: Dido and Aeneus, excerpt from Act III, RECITATIVE ONLY: “Thy hand, Belinda”;

Write a paragraph for each of the 3 pieces listed above in which you identify the work and describe the following aspects, using the appropriate and correct musical terms for the second and third of these aspects.

-brief but specific description of what the words (the lyrics) are about (just “love” or “religion” are not specific enough)

PART III: Form (15 points)

Base your responses for this part on the following pieces:

Hildegard of Bingen: “Alleluia”
Raimbaut de Vaqueiras: “Kalenda maya”
Purcell: Dido and Aeneus, excerpt from Act III, ARIA ONLY: “When I am laid in earth”; this corresponds to the portion of the excerpt in Listening Guide 8 that begins after 57 seconds. (Do not consider the recitative that precedes it, “Thy hand, Belinda,” for your response.)

In a single paragraph identify each of these works and its corresponding form using the appropriate musical term from class.

PART IV: Social Context (10 points)

Choose one piece from the seven listed at the beginning of these instructions and write a short paragraph in which you identify the piece and its social context (where it would be performed and for whom). Does it seem to you that the musical quality of the piece is appropriate for the context? Describe at least one of its musical elements using the appropriate term(s) we have covered to describe what that element is like in the piece you have chosen as support for whether you think the music is or is not appropriate for the context (there are many different ways to respond to this).
