Meet Sarah
Sarah Johnson is born into a loving family. While her parents struggle to make ends meet, they provide Sarah with a stable home life and a loving environment. Unfortunately, circumstances change and have a long-term impact on Sarah’s development.
Age 5
Sarah loses both of her parents in a boating accident. Sarah is taken into foster care while relatives can be located.
Sarah is shortly thereafter sent to live with her maternal aunt, Emily, and her husband, Fergus. Emily and Fergus have 2 children of their own, both of whom are in their early teens.
Emily and Fergus welcome Sarah into their home but struggle to spend a lot of time with her as both work full-time and have a full schedule of children’s clubs & activities
Age 8
In September, Emily receives a call from Sarah’ principal. Sarah has attacked one of the other students and ignored her teacher when reprimanded. The principal reports that this is not the first altercation that Sarah has been involved in but is the first that became physical.
Age 9
Sarah struggles to make friends or deal with her grief over losing her parents.Sarah struggles to make friends or deal with her grief over losing her parents. One day, Sarah goes to the store a block away with a couple of other girls from her neighborhood. Shortly thereafter, Emily receives a call from the store reporting that Sarah has been caught stealing candy with friends. Emily meets with the store manager and he is willing to let Sarah go, provided she doesn’t come back to the store without an adult.
Upon returning home, Emily lectures Sarah about her behavior and how she should not be hanging out with these “friends.” Sarah cries in response and Emily sends her to her room “to think about what she has done.”
Age 14- Sarah runs away from home, taking a bus to a nearby city where she meets slightly older kids in similar circumstances with whom she becomes friends. Sarah is homeless and devotes her time to finding places to stay and food to eat.
Age 15- In the city, Sarah is reported to the local police by a shop owner for shoplifting. The police call social services who meet with Sarah and determine that returning Sarah to her aunt and uncle is the best outcome for her.
After returning home, Sarah returns to school. She has missed close to a year of school and struggles to meet even minimum requirements.
She reconnects with her previous friends and returns to shoplifting and drinking alcohol, while adding vandalism and experimenting with various illicit drugs to her behavior. Sarah meets her new boyfriend, 18 year-old CC, through a mutual friend who regularly sells them the drugs.
Age 16- Realizing the strict disciplinary regime has created a rift between themselves and their children and Sarah, Emily and Fergus begin to relax the rules in the house. While the bond among the family grows, Sarah still feels isolated and resentful of any control over her life. When home, Sarah spends most of her time in her room on her computer and texting CC.
(fast forward to this week below)
Age 16- Outside of the home, Sarah and her boyfriend have a tumultuous relationship, caused in part by their increasing drug use. CC demands that Sarah help him burglarize a local house and both are quickly caught and arrested by police. After being arrested, Sarah is taken to a youth detention facility. Her case worker recommended that she stay in the facility until her case is processed through the juvenile court. While in the facility, Sarah is expected to attend classes, has limited and supervised computer use, and no access to her cellphone. She becomes increasingly hostile screaming that she wants to be with CC. CC was processed through the criminal justice system and sentenced to jail time, probation, and community service. He met a new girl and ceased all contact with Sarah
Primary Task Response: Thinking about Sarah’s interaction with the police, within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments:
• What are some ways that the police can help juveniles to reduce their risk of criminal behavior? Explain.
• What might Sarah expect to happen while going through the juvenile justice system? Explain.
• What are some of the protections Sarah would be entitled to in your state?
Be substantive and detailed in your response.
