8-9 Discussion question reply to Hiba and Antonia in 4-5 sentences.
Hiba: Afro-Caribbean religions share similarities to African Traditional religions as they are oral and spread through speech and passed down from generation to generation. The difference is that Afro-Caribbean religions are pluralistic as opposed to ATRs which are singular. It was interesting to learn that the Creole people were taught to hate their African heritage. They were to despise this part of it. As recent as the 1960s, they began to celebrate and pride themselves for their African origins. Why do you think that they were taught to hate their African heritage? It mentions the elite Creoles who were taught this way. Were they supposed to be better than the others by denouncing their African roots?
Antonia: The videos and reading really shined alight on what Vodou actually is and dispels the false rumors against it. It isn’t black magic as most people believe. It shows how Vodou came to be and how important it is to Haitian people. It’s African roots are very visible, especially when it’s explained in the videos. Vodou was very liberating for Haitian people who were going through the hardships of slavery. It was disheartening to see it demonized by people who believed it to be an evil pagan practice. It would be nice to see Vodou peacefully coexist with other Western religions in Haiti. Vodou isn’t any different from religions such as Buddhism and native African religions for its focus on nature and the universe.
