CLASS 1520: Greek and Roman Mythology Winter 2020 Written Assignment #4: Variants and Sources 1) Assignment Using http://www.theoi.com, choose a myth for which there are different extant versions, and then, in a very short paper (350 – 500 words maximum), a) briefly summarize two of the variants and then b) at greater length, discuss the sources (and authors) that preserve them. Among the questions you might choose to answer in section b) are i) Which version is older? ii) Who are the two authors? iii) What else did these authors write? In the course of researching your sources, you are advised to use University library resources and to avoid unscholarly websites: I particularly recommend Brill’s New Pauly (English version) and the Oxford Classical Dictionary, both of which are scholarly encyclopedias that can be accessed at https://libguides.lib.umanitoba.ca/az.php 2) Format The format will be MLA format, and you should both cite the sources from http://www.theoi.com accordingly and add a Works Cited page. Keep the following details in mind: 1) There is no title page in MLA style. Put the information normally there (name, date), on the first page of the assignment and include a word count. 2) Use double-spacing, Times New Roman, and a 12 point font. 3) MLA indents the first line of paragraphs. 4) MLA does not adjust the spacing between paragraphs and does not justify the text. CLAS 1520: Greek and Roman Mythology Winter 2020 3) Submission, Marking, and Feedback Use the UM Learn drop-box to submit your assignment. Convert your assignment to a PDF before uploading it. They will be marked out of 8, but reduced to a mark out of 4 for the term weight. There is a penalty of -1 per day out of 8 for each day the assignment is late. For the highest marks, your essay will be grammatically correct and follow the format guidelines. For this assignment, I will be especially looking at the use of punctuation (commas, colons, semi-colons) and for the correct format of your citations. I will provide feedback via UM Learn on all of your assignments. ______________________________________________________________________________ FORMAT OF THE FIRST PAGE: With Instructions Last Name followed by Page Number (about a 1/2 inch from the top) Your Name (about an inch from the top) Your Student Number Dr. C.M.
