Introduction – The webtour is this class’s major research project. The goal is to produce a virtual field trip to a significant location in American history. The spot itself need not be in the USA, but it must have played a major role in the country’s past. Think of this as an interactive research paper (or maybe better as an academic website or blogpost) that not only informs, but also engages, the reader. If you’re submitting a document, just post it here. If you’ve developed a website or blogpost, submit the URL to that site here.
Your final product should be a formal narrative that explains the role the location played in the past. Your submission must include embedded links (Links to an external site.) to outside resources that help enhance your work. You can submit it in written form or as a website (Links to an external site.). Here is a step-by-step rubric of what I’ll look for in your assignment….
Background Information (20 pts) – Provide a brief (300-500 word) narrative of what happened at this location. Who was involved? When did the event take place? What was the outcome of any actions or conflicts? Was it part of a larger series of events (war? Social reform campaign? Cultural movement?) What was happening in the US that can place this location and corresponding events in a historical context?
Visuals/Media (30 pts) – Let us experience your location! Incorporate links to at least three pictures, videos, online audio resources or anything else that can enhance the reader’s understanding of what this place is all about. Each link must feature a brief introduction of what the reader will be seeing/hearing.
Primary Sources (20 pts) – How was this place, and the events that happened there, viewed at the time? What type of documentation/artifacts exist that provide a contemporary view of the issue? Think of articles, speeches, diary entries, news reports, motion pictures/tv shows, advertisements FROM THE TIME PERIOD. Incorporate links to at least two primary sources to enhance the reader experience. You can reference them in your narrative and provide the links that the reader can follow to see them.
Important Person(s) (10 pts) – Who was involved at whatever happened in this location? Identify at least one major (at least as far as this issue is concerned) historical figure associated with the location and explain the part he or she played in the relevant events. Additionally, provide a link to biographical information about this person (or persons, if that’s appropriate or you’re especially ambitious).
(A brief aside – Obviously as you conduct your research and complete your webtour you’ll find that some of these elements coincide. Your primary sources may be produced by a person associated with the location…that person may be buried there and you have links to his or her gravesite…that type of thing. Feel free to combine these elements as necessary in your narrative. For instance, between your introduction and your analysis you may want to create a portion of the assignment that focuses on a specific spot where your significant person did whatever he or she did, and maybe even link to news articles about the event. This could be done in different ways, but that’s just one idea.)
Analysis (20 pts) – Why is this location a big deal? Explain in 300-500 words the impact this place, and what happened there, had in US history. Why does it still matter today? Do people recognize its significance? Is it a popular tourist spot? If so, why? If not, why not? Incorporate your primary sources and major person(s) in your analysis.
