Unit Two
Synthesis Paper
(1000 words)
Using two in-class discussion readings from this unit—“The Great Settling Down,” (FI book 141-145), the NYT article by Badger and Bui, “In 83 Million Eviction Records….” and a few informational/factual passages from Evicted, write a synthesis paper.
Process: Analysis begins with a thorough understanding of each reading. To write synthesis requires comparison. What ideas about eviction do some of the readings share? Sharing ideas does not equal agreement about ideas. For synthesis, sharing is enough. As you begin to notice common threads start making a list. Some of the items on your list should become the basis for individual paragraphs.
Begin, of course, with an introductory paragraph. An excellent example of a synthesis paper AND an introductory paragraph can be found under the Unit Two header “Synthesis Paper Example by Real VCU Student.”
Individual main body synthesis paragraphs must address one major topic found in at least two of the readings. Recognize that devoting one paragraph to each reading is NOT the assignment.
A synthesis paper does NOT include a strong claim, one you are trying to prove. Instead, synthesis paper claims alert the reader to the ideas shared by multiple readings.
Write as if you are providing a guide to the set of sources for someone who has not read them or only skimmed them.
Do a correct MLA or APA Works Cited page. Links by themselves are NOT citations. No, do not include it in your word or page count.
In a separate piece of reflection writing, decide whether or not these readings changed your mind or merely confirmed your thoughts about eviction, tenants’ rights, poverty, and or race. Make specific references to the articles and the book. That means quoting a few spots. Your real life is also welcome in this reflection. (400-500 words or 1.5 pages to 1.8 pages)
