Directions: treat this assignment as if it were an in-class exam. Follow each of the below steps, paying close attention to the requirements of the prompt. Contact your instructor should you need any additional clarification.
Step 1: read the Portfolio of Poems about Work (pp. 590-600).
Step 2: answer questions 1-11 on p. 397, “Critical Questions For Reading Poetry,” for any three of the eight poems from the Portfolio of Poems about Work (you may choose any three you like). This means your Unit 2 Exam will have 33 answers in total (11 questions about 3 poems = 33 answers), so be sure to allocate enough time to thoroughly analyze each of your selected poems and address each question thoughtfully.
For example, you might choose “Reapers,” “To Be of Use,” and “Daystar” as your three poems for this Unit Exam. You would then answer questions 1-11 about each of these three poems. Please answer questions in order about one poem at a time, so in this example, you would answer all of the questions about “Reapers” before moving on the write about “To Be of Use.” Remember to number your responses.
Tips for Success:
Re-read this unit’s assigned readings (“How Do I Read Poetry?” (pp. 394-397; Persona & Tone: 398-414; Poetic Language: 415-431; Poetic Form: 432-454) so that you are familiar with the terms used in each of the eleven questions of Chart 12-1. You will be marked down if you do not demonstrate clear understand of what the question is asking and how the terms apply specifically to poetry.
Use textual evidence for support, integrating it smoothly and citing appropriately. (NOTE: for poetry, we cite the line number in parenthesis at the end of the sentence the quote is used in.)
There is no page minimum or maximum; demonstrate you dedicated sufficient time to exploring and analyzing your selected poems, and that you thoughtfully crafted each response.
