Tulsa Race Massacre

(Much has been written about the Tulsa Race Massacre (formerly referred to as the “Tulsa Race Riot”), and, understandably, the focus is largely on social dynamics between racial and economic groups in Tulsa. One of the challenges for these essays is to account for other dimensions of identity as they also factor into the events of 1921 and their ongoing effects. A broad question to begin this analysis is, “how do popular ideas about identity and society influence the events and study of the Tulsa Race Massacre?”

Drawing on the course materials, the resources provided, and additional secondary research, trace one aspect, idea, person, or issue related to the Tulsa Race Massacre. How does your angle on the topic relate to gender and other aspects of identity? You will have to decide what single aspect or issue stands out for you, and assert your own claim about it.

Researching, choosing a topic, refining your thesis, and developing your own argument takes time. Please begin by perusing the sources, following links, doing searches in our library databases, and looking for your own angle on the subject. No essay should be an overview of the race massacre; each one illuminates a slice of the larger topic while making its own point.

Thesis: The Tulsa Race Massacre is historical evidence of inequality based on the racial profile of an individual, and today, this inequality is still prevalent. The event itself explains of an African American man being wrongfully accused of raping a white woman. The white men in Tulsa became enraged and all things became chaotic. No white man was punished for the crimes that happen during the roit, however, many African American’s were killed. This horrific event shows how white men are more privileged than the African American men.
