(Directions & Requirements. Please let me know if you need anything else the garbology book! There is no page requirement) > For the Final Exam your assignment will be: Trash and Waste in America There is much disagreement about the issues of trash, waste, and recycling in the US. Our waste system is very much “out of sight, out of mind” – we don’t think about it unless it’s right in front of us. While it is easy to say that we should be conscious of our trash and waste, it is much easier to simply ignore the issue. As a country, our policy seems to be: trash isn’t that big of a concern for humans or the environment. There are many other things we should worry about more. However, for many people (Humes especially), our waste is a major issue that warrants attention. For the Final Exam, you will address skeptics and people who are uninformed about how waste affects our lives, communities, and the environment. Basically, tell us how and why trash is a problem now and for future generations. What evidence do you have to back this up? Use evidence from Garbology — three quotes are required — and (if relevant) personal experience to address this topic. Make sure you have a clear argument that concludes your introductory paragraph. TL;DR: Pretend you are writing an academic, argumentative essay that is addressed to people who believe “Trash isn’t a big deal. It doesn’t affect me.” Using Garbology, cite evidence that connects to this topic. Requirements: FIRST: When you are ready to begin your Final Exam, log into Canvas and post “I’m starting my exam” in the Comment section of the assignment. Set a timer for 2 hours and complete the Exam within that time frame. When you have proofread and finished your Exam, submit the assignment file like you would for a regular Essay. You do not have to take the full 2 hours to work. During a regular in-class exam, many students finish within 70-90 minutes. It’s really up to you though and what you’re comfortable with. [Link for how to submit a Comment is provided at end of page.] Your essay must have an introduction that provides context about the topic and ends with a clear argument. Assume your reader is not in our class. Use at least THREE direct quotations from Garbology. If you paraphrase or quote, make sure you cite the page number. Use MLA format for the document as a whole. Your essay should have TWO or three main points (body paragraphs). Make sure your essay is organized and that your paragraphs connect back to your thesis. I encourage you to make notes or create a brief outline in your notebook before you begin writing your essay. (If you have only two body paragraphs, make sure they are detailed.) Your body paragraphs should begin with a topic sentence that tells us your argument for the section. Ask yourself “What am I trying to convince readers of with this paragraph?” That information is your topic sentence. Since you have access to OWL Purdue online, please create a Work Cited entry at the end of your paper. If you have a digital copy of the book that doesn’t have any page numbers, please let me know this somewhere in the document you submit so I don’t mark you down for incorrect citations. All documents will be checked for plagiarism. Please use ONLY your book, word processor, and your mind during the exam. Exams that contain plagiarism will be given an F and students will be reported. Do not talk to other classmates, students, or friends/family while you work on the Exam. Exams can only be submitted between 5/20 and 5/24. If you do not submit the file in time, you will receive a zero on the assignment.
