Your task is to create an argumentative research essay that investigates a current topic. You must choose a theme from the weekly discussions and curate a topic of interest – then you must collect, evaluate, and synthesize the resources that are relevant to your argument while establishing your position in a concise manner. In essence, the research paper is a vehicle for documenting and defending your thinking about a current issue of your choice.
Your paper should be a thesis-driven analysis that demonstrates your argument and understanding of a current issue of choice discussed in class.
Once you have chosen a theme, you must cite ALL the resources under that theme (SEE the theme and readings above)— this means, that the readings under each theme will be included in your body paragraphs and work cited page. The requirement will show me that you understand the readings objectively and that your topic was carefully thought out.
Choose (1) Credible Source that counters or refutes your argument. This will help prove that your argument is arguable.
You must follow MLA formatting and have precise, accurate quotes from sources with proper credit (author and page number, work cited page, using the MLA system) given to sources.
Essay Length: 8-10 pages. (8 Full pages minimum, 10 pages maximum)
Credible Resources: Minimum of 6 peer-reviewed articles, and 8 resources max. Resources may easily be found by using Ohlone’s Library Database.
Argumentative Research Requirements/Outline:
Introduction: In one (or at the most two) paragraph(s) introduce your topic. Give a brief summary of your essay in a few sentences. Remember to include a thesis statement that specifically sets out what you are proving to be true regarding the causes of the negative situation. Your evaluative-causal claim should be specific, logical, and clear.
History/Background Paragraphs
Background paragraphs are usually 2-3 paragraphs tops. Most of the time, background paragraphs are optional and can be omitted depending on how you decide to format your paper. The purpose of the background paragraphs is to lay the foundation to prove your argument. It will often include:
Summary of works being discussed: This is similar to the summaries for the Critical Analysis essays.
Definition of key terms: It is when you define vague terms to your understanding and make it specific to support your claim. (Example: mental health, gender, race)
Body Paragraphs: This is the longest portion of your essay, the heart of your work. Once you have detailed the history/background to the current situation and evaluated the current situation, you are ready to present your argument. Each body paragraph should cover a different idea or piece of evidence and contain a topic sentence that clearly and concisely explains why the reader should agree with your position. Remember to use specific supporting detail/examples, and to analyze all of your research thoroughly and with clarity.
Counterargument and Rebuttal: There will be many who disagree with you, so you will want to acknowledge their points of view. What are their assumptions about this topic? What questions do they raise for consideration? Acknowledging other points of view gives your essay credibility and shows that you have been fair and broad in your inquiry and presentation. Then explain how you have considered this counterargument, but still find your own analysis to be more logical and accurate. (This is your rebuttal and you will need at least one credible source to represent your counterargument.)
Conclusion: Summarize the meaningful conclusions you have drawn clearly and precisely, remembering to re-summarize your thesis.
