The Story Behind the Quote
(Arquely Burgos, “Beer Can”)
Assignment 5 Revised
Due April 18
1,000 words minimum
You began the semester with storytelling. You learned how to provide information details to answer readers’ questions and sense details to help readers see what you saw, hear what you heard, and feel what you felt. You were thinking about readers and helping them to be there with you in the story you were describing. Now you are telling the story of what you have read. Do the same things. Give your readers the details they will need from the readings to help them notice what you noticed and think what you thought.
Assignment 5 asked you to use Bunn to analyze the writing choices Santiago or Kincaid or Burgos made or to read Bunn or your own Assignment 3 like a writer. For #6 expand what you said and use more details and quotations. Provide background information about each source and provide context for all quotations so that any reader will understand the quotes, why the authors are saying those things, and what was happening in the reading when the author said those words.
CHECKLIST for Assignment 6
Write for people who don’t know about the course readings, and help them to understand what each is about.
Remember, this is a revision which means you are looking to make your writing better in all parts of your essay.
Use quotations to help readers see why you say what you say about each reading.
Provide context for each quotation (the story behind the quote).
Provide signal phrases and page citations for all quotations and paraphrases and include the title and the full names of the authors when quoting or paraphrasing them for the first time. Also, include either author credentials (for example, researcher, educator, evolutionary biologist) or the article title in the signal phrase:
In “The Cognition of Discovery: Defining a Rhetorical Problem,” Linda Flower and John R. Hayes say, “good writers create a particularly rich network of goals for affecting their reader” (30).
Composition researchers Linda Flower and John R. Hayes say, “good writers create a particularly rich network of goals for affecting their reader” (30).
Use last names only when quoting or paraphrasing the same source for a second time. Example:
Flower and Hayes say, “good writers are simply solving a different problem than poor writers” (30).
If your source is an online article that doesn’t list a page number, enter a “no page” citation at the end of the quote or paraphrase (n.p.).
Provide a basic Works Cited that lists author (last name first), the title of work, and the name of the publisher: Bunn, Mike. “How to Read Like a Writer.” Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing
