In a two page essay (minimum 450 words, can be more) please address the following:
Identify: In “I Have a Dream” written and delivered by Civil Rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he asserts in part the denial of rights of African Americans impeded their ability to survive and/or thrive. Before you start your narrative (prompt below) identify at least one quote or example from this speech that supports this assertion. Write this as the opening sentence(s) of your narrative.
Think: We can certainly witness other instances when other factors, often unrelated to race, yet related to other aspects of personal identity, may have hindered, slowed down, or even impeded a person’s ability to survive or thrive in society.
Prompt: Discuss a time when this happened to you or someone that you know. Your narrative should follow a pattern of a typical narrative pattern (time order).
Your narrative essay should be structured as follows in chronological order:
First: (Set the scene) At what point in your life did this event occur?was it over a period of time, or did it occur during shorter amount of time. Where were you?
Then: (Describe the challenge or conflict) What happened? How did it make you feel? Were there contributing factors or people that made it better or worse? Did anyone offer you any advice?
Next: (Your response to the situation) What did you decide to do? Did it make the situation better or worse? What was the response of those around you to your handling of the situation?
Finally: Were you able to overcome the challenge What was the outcome? Was it favorable or not? Is it something that you are still dealing with?
Ultimately: What lesson(s) did you learn: Your reflective thoughts and feelings regarding the situation
