Please write a two-page paper (word count around 680) from the perspective of a Roman citizen or an individual in contact with Roman civilization (i.e. a Dacian prisoner of war to be sold in a Roman slave market, a Pictish woman encountering Roman soldiers near Hadrian’s Wall, etc.).
You can also juxtapose two opposing positions. For example, a member of a Germanic/Celtic tribe (page 1) voices his astonishment concerning the strange appearance, clothes, and religious practices of the Romans, while a Roman governor finds himself puzzled by the Germanic/Celtic way of life (page 2). The key task of this paper is to put yourself in the “historical shoes” of individuals from a bygone time. Be sure to use appropriate language and avoid twenty-first-century idioms! No academic sources are required for this paper, although the reading/viewing of articles/documentaries before writing your essay will surely be helpful! Have fun with this project!
