Essays will generally consist of 3 ½ double-spaced pages. Use 12 inch font only, do not bold.Proper citations and references are required if you augment your paper with directly related sources (explain). Supplemental material must be limited and consist of no more than a total of one typewritten page (explain). However, for the most part, your essay must focus specifically on the material presented in class. Your essay thesis must consist of 3 logically consistent ideas and an opinion
Each idea must be separated by a comma
Each essay must have an interpretation section
Each essay much have 7 paragraphs
Your thesis must be logically consistent, concise, and to the point. Your thesis must state the intent of the paper.

Summary

The introduction must contain 2 paragraphs:

First introductory paragraph: The first paragraph is general, yet, specific in its content. A general overview is fine, but the student much also include facts contained in the entire documentary. The introduction is based on factual information. It is not your opinion. Avoid your opinions.

Second introductory paragraph: Discuss (describe) the thesis ideas in the second introductory paragraph and then state the thesis at the end of the second paragraph. A thesis is a structured statement which tells the reader specifically what the paper is about. The thesis must consist of a complete sentence, consisting of 3 ideas and an opinion. The opinion is not a separate sentence.

Body: Each paragraph must have an introductory sentence that describes what is contained in the paragraph. The introductory sentence presents the idea that you will discuss. The first sentence must reflect specifically and clearly the idea to be discussed, using the actually concept/term or a synonym used in the thesis.

The concluding sentence connects your idea with the following idea (paragraph). This gives your essay its flow and helps to tell your story. Each sentence must be a logical flow from the preceding sentence. This makes for a well developed paragraph and ease in flow. Avoid writing in the first person.

Interpretation/discussion: This section focus on the opinion in your thesis and connects your ideas in a logically consistent manner. This is where you give your critical analysis of what you have written, without using first person.. How do you interpret what is in the documentary and/or what you have written? What does it all mean in some broader context? What does it mean for the black family or community? Evaluation for this

section is based solely on critical analysis and interpretation of what you have written, as well as how you have integrated your concepts with the opinion in your thesis statement.

Summary: Restate your theses in other words, provide an overview of major points, and conclude. Do not include ideas that have not already been discussed in the paper. The summary is not an interpretation in this paper.
