In your paper, please compare, contrast, and discuss the points made by the authors of each of the articles.
Your paper must contain:
– A heading or title to your paper on the first page.
– A Bibliography section consisting of the names of the authors, the year that the articles were written, and where the article could be found.
– 3-4 pages typed /printed (12 point New York Times font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins)
-The first page of the article used (the actual first page).
Your written work will be evaluated on:
-The quality of the sources that you find
-Your level of sociological insight
-The quality of your writing (including content, demonstration of insight and critical thinking, spelling, grammar and organization)
Important: This is an Introductory Sociology class. The purpose of the assignment is to stimulate thinking on sociology. Keep your focus on Sociology. Your bibliography must be based on sociological research and writing. Please avoid discussion of psychology, history, economics, political science, etc.
This assignment is due no later than Thursday, April 30th. No extensions of time will be given. Absolutely no papers will be accepted after that date and time.
You must e-mail them to me.
Step 1: Topic
The following is the Topic/ Research Question for the SO 111 Introduction to Sociology writing assignment:
Topic: Must Economic Inequality Exist for a Class-Based Society to Function Effectively?
Step 2: Select Articles
I have posted your first article on Blackboard. You must use the posted article plus one other of your own choosing.
The mandatory article is entitled “Uses of the Underclass in America”, by renowned sociologist/anthropologist Herbert Gans. You must find one other source or article.
In writing your paper, you should consider the following:
1. What are the main arguments? Be detailed and discuss each author’s purpose for conducting the research.
2. What are the authors’ main points in the articles? What are the key questions/concepts in the minds of the authors?
3. What are the conclusions in the articles?
You will compare, contrast and discuss the articles that you have read. You will tell me which article is more relevant, coherent, etc.
With all due respect, I am not looking for your opinion about which of the articles you find the most interesting. I also understand that to live in poverty is not a desired situation. I am looking for your ability to analyze the research and conclusions reached by the respective authors. Which article most directly assists you in answering the question?
In discussing/contrasting/comparing the articles, you may refer to other sources besides the two articles. This does not include your textbook or Wikipedia.
You must include a bibliography, listing your sources. Any quotations or information taken from any of your outside sources must be followed by a citation to the source. There is nothing wrong with referring to outside sources. Indeed, I encourage you to do so. You must let me know, through a citation, when you do so, however. Sources must be cited according to APA format.
