The Music Industry 1982‐2020

Write a 6‐8 page essay on how digital technology revolutionized the business of making and selling music since the arrival of the compact disc in 1982. Additionally, compare the paths of two musicians whose careers were forged during the beginning of this century (Drake and Danny Michel – information on Danny attached). Secondly, the global crisis of COVID‐19 has changed society without any guarantee of what the future will hold, and those within the creative sector are desperately trying to
protect the industry from financial ruin. Write two to three paragraphs on the actions you would take to ensure the sustainability of the live music industry during this period of COVID‐19. Read the questions very carefully, analyze it, and break it down into its component parts (its main topics and
subtopics).

Pay special attention to the scope and/or focus of the question. This may include such details as the
overall setting or place, the time frame, special keywords, names (of people, places, things, events), requests for
specific types of examples to include, etc.

Also pay special attention to the words (imperative verbs) that are used in the question to give you instructions (explain, discuss, describe, examine, etc.).

The essay should focus on three themes:
1. History of technological change ca. 1982‐present.
2. How streaming impacted the careers of two artists.
3. The impact of COVID‐19 on live performance.

Divide the body of the essay into several main sections according to the main sections of the question. If you don’t divide your work into these larger sections, at least make sure you divide it into paragraphs. Never write one whole page without dividing into paragraphs at least once. Indent each paragraph 5 spaces at the beginning. Make sure there is a main idea for each paragraph and that the ideas in each sentence in the paragraph are connected to this main idea. In other words, don’t mix up a whole bunch of topics in the same paragraph and don’t jump around all over the place from topic to topic. If you do, your ideas will become very disorganized and incoherent. Do not repeat entire ideas or pieces information in one paragraph that you have already said in some other paragraph. Do not just list a bunch of “facts.” Try to create a real in‐depth “picture” that shows you understand how and why
the music industry evolved the way it did and the different factors that affected it. Be very careful not to lose the logic and flow of your ideas when you do this. Put events in chronological order as much as possible. Don’t jump around all over the place through time. Usually, you should start from the earliest/most historical date and then work your way up to the most recent. Try to make some sort of conclusion for your essay, even if it is just a couple of sentences. However, don’t simply repeat what you have already said. Try to say something in the conclusion that is thoughtful or memorable.
