Let’s Visit Albania

Sophisticated Monroe College reader and researcher, Joana shared a lovely poem through the lenses of the Albanian immigrant experience. The poet left Albania at the height of the Communist Movement in the 1960s and went to study in Russia. Yet, the poet longed for Albania. The people. The food. The culture. Mundane things that he missed. This poem is a part of the Albanian Poezi or canon of Albanian Literature. Review the taped session to learn more.Let’s visit Saint Kitts-Nevis, Caribbean

Sophisticated Monroe College reader and researcher, Sharon shared a poem that she loved from her bildunsroman experiences living in Saint Kitts, Nevis, Caribbean. It was a Jamaican poem about the agrarian lifestyle of a banana farmer. Please review the taped session to hear from Sharon as she reads this beloved Caribbean Poem from the canon of Caribbean Literature.

Let’s visit Jamaica, Caribbean

Sophisticated Monroe College reader and researcher, Zawadi shared a poem that is dear to her heart. The poem is about domestic bliss that turns into domestic discord. yet, the mother is able to hold the reins of the household together despite her sadness about the turning point in her romance with her husband who has a

“wandering eye” – British idiom (Author unknown, N.D). Please visit the taped session to listen to Zawadi read this tempest-tossed love story.

I look forward to seeing all of you in class next Monday. Get ready to read excerpts from the literary works you selected and also to listen to others in the cohort share their responses to the literature, or read excerpts from their work.

Photographs

Please upload a current photograph of yourself to the Blackboard Collaborative by Monday. Thanks.

Extra: Here is an additional resource that can help students when trying to “Brainstorm” (Osborn, 1939) about ideas to write about.

Joseph Campbell created a design that students can use to follow a storyline in literature. Campbell noticed that many stories have a hero who undergoes many trials or obstacles and must conquer these before emerging victorious as the “Archetypal Hero” (Campbell, ). How many faces does(do) the character(s) within the literary selection exude?

In Joana’s poem the Albanian poet is a student, writer, immigrant, and a person who is homesick. In Sharon’s poem the main character or protagonist is an ordinary working class man who is fighting for his right to be respected in society. The character is also a proud farmer and advocacy for the farm to table philosophy. How do you get nice, fresh bananas to purchase? Let the Banana man tell you step-by-step how this is done. Zawadi entered the realm of the domestic home-front which can often be a battlefield of human emotions. The protagonist is a mother, household technician, wife, and a woman scorned. It has been said that “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” (Congreve, 1695). However, is this the case in this poem? Please review the taped session to find out.

Please watch this Netflix Video because it is a lead into next week’s discussion. You can infuse elements of this video into your own literary criticism and analysis essay for Week 7.

Please incorporate literary devices or terminology in your responses to the literature via your essays.
