Instructions
Create an annotated bibliography on a specific topic of your choice that is relevant to the theme of this course: sustainability. An annotated bibliography is a written document that presents sources to a reader and that helps you, the writer, to process those sources for a research paper. You will only submit one draft (no revision) of your Annotated Bibliography. Your Annotated Bibliography must present three credible sources that help you to better understand your topic and that you have found through research (not sources assigned to the class).
Research: A credible source is one authored by a professional who has researched the topic. Sources may be: articles, books, interviews, lectures, presentations, reports, audio/visual recordings, or web media. On the open Web, you may use a search engine (e.g., Google and Yahoo) for your research, but then you will need to determine whether the resulting sources are credible. You might search a specific, credible archive, such as ted.com, or an online magazine, such as theatlantic.com. You should also use the GSU Library to find credible sources. At least one of your three sources must be scholarly, peer-reviewed; searching Library Databases, use the Limit tool for Scholarly (peer-reviewed) Journals. Simply taking the first three sources that you find will probably not help you in the long run. You may need to try different databases and key terms for your searches, skim through many different titles, and even read a number of sources before you find three that prove useful for developing your Persuasive Essay. Keep in mind that one source can lead you to others; use sources’ endnotes or footnotes and their bibliographies to help you find sources.
Compile: When you choose a source, copy or create an MLA-style, end-of-text citation of it to include in your Annotated Bibliography. (You will also include this citation on the Works Cited page of your Persuasive Essay.) Follow the MLA Guide to ensure that your source is formatted properly. List your sources in alphabetical order by the first letter of the citation (the first letter of the surname of the author or of the first main word of the title if the source does not identify an author).
Read and Write: Below each citation, write one, first-line indented paragraph (i.e., annotation) of about 200 words. In your annotation, summarize the source’s main ideas and key examples in mostly your own words. You may include one or two carefully selected, clearly incorporated, brief quotations from the source in your annotation. In the same paragraph, explain why you find the source helpful and how you plan to use the source in your Persuasive Essay Based on Research.
Format: Format your Annotated Bibliography in MLA style: use double (2.0) line spaces throughout. Include a header with your surname and page number aligned right, a heading, the title Annotated Bibliography, citations (see MLA Guide, 8th edition), and your annotations.
