In the final assignment for ARIN3640 Games and Play, you are required to write a 2,000 word essay responding to one of the five questions below.
This essay should have a clear argument and solid theoretical framework, which means that it should demonstrate your in-depth understanding of a key concept from one of the readings through the analysis of a game(s). Your essay should also demonstrate academic research beyond the set readings, and we encourage you to draw on your own experiences and expertise as a player.
While the essay questions each map to a lecture topic, it is expected that your essay draw on content from other weeks as well (but not necessarily every week). You are expected to select a question and bring a draft of your argument to the tutorial in Week 13 for preliminary feedback.

Essay Questions
Identification with the player-character is widely recognised as being crucial to the player experience of games in the role-play genre. Analyse the role that identification plays in the player experience of a game from a different genre.
Explore the representation of race, gender, sexuality, class, politics or disability in a game. Consider in particular the ideas discussed in Week 9.
The smartphone is one of the most important gaming platforms in the history of digital games. Analyse a mobile game regarding how it leverages the locative, mobile or situated aspects of mobile play, and how these are linked to the game’s immersive or engaging experience.
Analyse a controversy in games culture or about a game using Carter’s “Demarcation Problem” (2015). This could be a media panic around the inclusion of transgressive content in a game, or arguments over rules in games or sports.
Focus on what a controversy tells us, rather than trying to argue one way or another. For instance, an essay analysing a lootboxes controversy wouldn’t argue that lootboxes are definitely bad, but what does the lootbox controversy reveal about the way we value things in games?
5. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are exciting new mediums for gameplay experiences. Analyse the player experience in 1 or 2 VR or AR games from the perspective of identification, embodiment, psychological presence, or online sociality
All submissions for Assignment 3 should follow the APA 6th Referencing and Citation Style.
Distinguishing Your Essay from Assignment 3
As this assignment is similar to the adapted assignment 2, you are strongly advised not to draw on Bogost’s procedural rhetoric or the ideas around game design values in developing your argument.
FAQ
Q: Can my essay analyse more than one game?
A: Yes! It can. Some of the effective ways I have seen this being done is by juxtaposing two games (e.g., new Tomb Raider vs Old Tomb Raider games) or by having two very different examples that help support your argument in different ways. However, I recommend against analysing more than 2 games in depth, as this is difficult to do in sufficient depth within the 2,000 word limit.
Q: My essay is too long because I just loved this unit so much. What is the maximum word limit?
A: We accept 10% over or under (1800 – 2200 words). Any more than this receives a 10% penalty per 10% over/under the word count. This is for equity reasons, and because casual teaching assistants are paid a fixed rate per word.
Q: Does my essay need to be in the third person? Or can I write it in the first person?
A: We don’t mind, it is up to you.

Q: Should my essay have an abstract?
A: No. Your essay should not have a separate abstract. It is a waste of your limited word count!
Q: What referencing style should I use?
A: We will be requiring all submissions for Assignment 3 to follow the APA 6th Referencing and Citation Styles
