Q. What is the best theory of morality or virtue, according to you? Discuss and defend. This essay requires both (a) a description/explanation of what you consider to be the best moral theory or best account of morality and (b) a defense/justification of why it is best. It should reflect what we have studied and discussed this semester. Some possible approaches: You might agree wholeheartedly with one author we have read. If so, you want first to present the theory, and then you want to engage in a thoughtful exploration, discussion, analysis and evaluation of why you think it is best. Alternatively, you might like parts of a couple authors’ theories. Again, present the theory you are proposing, and then reflect/discuss/evaluate/ and defend your choice.
Some things to keep in mind: just as, in our discussions of the various authors, we have focused both on what a given author understands as the foundation and on what is the proper end, so too in your discussion, you want to be sure to address both of these. But don’t just identify and declare what you think are the proper foundation and the proper end—discuss, analyze, and defend WHY these are the best choice.
As you develop your explanation of what you think is the best theory, again, do not just state it, but explore and explain how it functions (this is a great place to consider offering an example or two).
And as you develop your analysis, evaluation, and defense, this is a great place to include mention of why and how what you are proposing is better than some other alternative—e.g., why is Locke, if that is whom you agree with, better than Kant, or vice versa. After all, if you are arguing that the account you are presenting is the best, this means it is better than certain other possibilities.
In the end, your essay should illustrate your understanding of what the essence of morality is and how and why it is central to the best life. It should also be well written, substantive, and thoughtful.
