A bibliography is a list of sources (books, articles, documents, etc.) with complete citation information. An annotated bibliography also provides this information, but each entry is followed by an annotation, a paragraph that first summarizes or describes the main idea of the source in 1 or 2 sentences and then evaluates the source (6 – 10 sentences). The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to help you evaluate the usefulness of your sources; to inform the reader of the relevancy of the sources; and to develop your understanding of your topic.
When writing the annotation, remember that you should spend only 1 or 2 sentences maximum summarizing the main idea. The bulk of the annotation should be spent evaluating the source. You may want to answer some (but clearly not all) of the following questions for each of your sources to write a good evaluation:
How does this source illuminate your topic or deepen your understanding of your topic?
What did you learn from this article that you didn’t learn in other articles?
What is the author’s point of view? How does this author see the world?
Who is the audience for this piece of information, and why does that matter?
What problems did you uncover in this piece of information?
What ridiculous claims does this piece of information make, if any?
Your annotated bibliography should contain a minimum of 10 entries from a variety of sources including books, articles, and web sites. Using one type of source (i.e. all web sites or all articles) is not acceptable.
