Taking Position on an Issue

Select a position and write a persuasive/argumentative paper on the topic that was approved by your English teacher. Take a position for or against the issue you selected and develop a thesis statement to persuade your audience to take some type of action. Compile your research into a written paper designed to convince your reader to agree with your position.
*The senior research project is a requirement for graduation and will count as 50% of the third marking period grade.
Format:
** The paper is 8-10 pages(7-8 full pages typed plus works cited).
**The paper must be typed and a hard copy handed in on 2021.
**The paper must be typed using “Times New Roman” text and be in 12 point font.
**Must include at least 6 citations.
**Must include a well-developed thesis statement.
**Works cited must contain 3 or more sources.
**Your sources must come from a variety of places. (Books, internet sources, research databases, articles, films, biographies, or interviews.) These sources should be academic sources.
**Plagiarism is copying another person’s work without giving proper credit to the original source of the information. Activities considered to be plagiarism include:
-copying phrases or sentences from books and other sources without including an in-text citation.
-copying and pasting information from the Internet into your paper.
-downloading other people’s papers, articles, or essays and submitting them as your own.
**The best ways to avoid plagiarism are:
-paraphrase the author’s information into your own words and then add an in-text citation at the end of each sentence you rephrased.
-use quotation marks around the sentence you want to use directly from your source, using the directions for in-text citations.
**Plagiarism will not be accepted, students who do so will be subject to disciplinary action as per the Student Handbook. Students will also receive a failing grade on the paper.

In order to be prepared, please make sure you have the following items with you every day that you are working on the paper. If you come to class unprepared any day we are doing research in the library or class, a zero will be recorded.
1. All research paper handouts.
2. Chromebooks
3. A package of lined note cards.
4. Rubber bands and/or paper clips (various sizes)
5. A pen or pencil
6. One or more highlighters
7. Some sources to take notes (book, articles, printouts, etc…)
Guidelines

1. Topic.
a. It is selected by the student, and is not confined to a specific content area/discipline.
b. The teacher may guide a student, in the absence of a topic.

2. Thesis Statement.

a. The traditional research method will be by note taking on 3 x 5 file cards.

3. MLA.
a. Use of the MLA style guide for both formatting of the text and the citing of information is required.

4. Font.
a. The typed text must be 12 point Times New Roman.

5. Length
a. The typed text shall minimally be 3 pages long, not including your Works Cited page.

a. All plagiarism shall be reported to the building administrator, as per Board of Education Policy 5701 Plagiarism:
i. Teacher will withhold credit for the research paper.
ii. Students are subject to the disciplinary guidelines of the policy.
iii. Students shall be granted due process.

i. All students are REQUIRED to submit their research papers (rough/final drafts through the website, www.turnitin.com.
