Writing Topics
Choose one of the following writing topics to formulate your argument.

1.)Argue that the SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the U.S.) ruled correctly on this case by explaining the obligation the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and the Colorado Appeals Court had to protect religious freedom. Here are some ideas to consider:
Why is this protection important, specially when considering the beginnings of the U.S. as a nation?
When does such protection infringe on the rights of other people?
What kind of parameters should limit the Exercise Clause if any at all?

2.) Consider Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor’s dissent: “Phillips would not sell to Craig and Mullins, for no reason other than their sexual orientation, a cake of the kind he regularly sold to others. When a couple contacts a bakery for a wedding cake, the product they are seeking is a cake celebrating their wedding– not a cake celebrating heterosexual weddings or same-sex weddings– and that is the service Craig and Mullins were denied” (4-5). Argue that the SCOTUS indeed ruled incorrectly, and that this case masked discrimination behind religious liberties.
