Instructions-The purpose of this assignment is for you to pursue a topic of your interest which either falls under or is connected to the study of critical thinking. As stated on the Syllabus and announced in class, I would like you to choose a book from the list of Additional Texts (see Syllabus), read a substantial portion of it (at least 50 pages), and write a paper in response to specific points or passages in the book that you find interesting, valuable, and/or objectionable. Your tasks are as follows: (1) State, in your own words, what you take to be the main point of the book and explain why the author takes this to be an interesting and/or valuable point. Then say whether you agree or disagree with it (or both) and explain why. [½ – 1 page] (2) Support your assessment of the author’s main point by choosing two to three passages to discuss in more detail. Once again, first explain, in your own words, what the author is saying in these passages, and then say whether you agree or disagree with it (or both) and explain why. [2 – 3 pages] (3) Synthesize the results of your preceding discussion by “zooming out” and addressing bigger ideas that are at issue, ideas which have a significant value to human life in general. If possible, find a way to link these ideas to the idea of critical thinking, say what you think the value of critical thinking is to human life in general, and assess whether and how the book contributes to this value. [½ – 1 page]
