Statement of Purpose

n a 750-1000 word essay, please describe what experiences motivate and prepare you to complete your baccalaureate degree at the NYUSPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies. In your response please address each of the following questions:

What led you to decide on the degree program that you are applying to? Describe how this choice fits into your personal, academic, and professional trajectory. What opportunities do you plan on pursuing upon graduation?
My Answer: NYU SPS Online Degree, I am able to study and earn my degree from Seoul, South Korea. My father passed away due to lung cancer and therefore I took over his company, (Seojin Electronics) at a very young age. I need guidance and need to work full time here in Seoul South Korea, NYU SPS online degree fits perfectly to my schedule. After work, I will take my online courses that NYU offers in the evening. During my past academic history, I was not able to focus on my academics because I was not able to even attend classes because of my father’s last moments. Upon graduation, I want to apply to law school and earn a JD degree so that I can protect manage Seojin Electronics with legal knowledge. Legal knowledge will also protect me from my uncles trying to maliciously take over the company stocks knowing that my father is no longer here with us.

How do you know that you are prepared to invest the time and attention that success in your chosen program requires? In your answer, please provide an example from your past educational or professional experience that helps us get a sense of who you are as a learner and your demonstrated ability to see projects to completion.
My Answer: For the past years, my father was at the hospital fighting cancer and therefore, academics were not my priorities. To be frank, I actually had no interest in academic success whatsoever. Due to young realization of the concept of death, I also went through severe depression and needed to get rehab. My father passed away few weeks ago, and I realized through rehab that even though life may seem short and hopeless, one must live life to the fullest at that moment. Now I have found a dream to become an attorney to manage my company and NYU SPS Social Science will provide me the necessary knowledge and privilege to go to law school and eventually pass the bar exam later on. From past educational experiences, I was never really interested in academics but was always had excellent social skills. This particular skill that I have helped me make new and keep clients trading with Seojin Electronics. However, now that I have a distinct goal with academic success, I am ready to learn the necessary knowledge needed to do so.

Being successful often requires approaching new challenges (e.g.,starting a new degree program), with optimism and purpose. What strategies do you use when faced with a new challenge or situation? How would you apply those to navigating NYUSPS? In your answer, please provide an example of time when you overcame a challenge or obstacle trying something new. What steps did you take to be successful? How did you secure the support that you needed?
My Answer: Strategies that I use when faced with new challenges, I don’t question or resist the situation. I accept the challenge that has been given to me and try to find solutions. I learned this through depression that even when everything seems so useless and hopeless, there is always a light that can be found if you think from a different perspective. Also, through my short period of professional career at a young age, I learned something new. Receiving help and support from other people during new challenges is nothing to be ashamed of. My father was always the kind of person who tried to accomplish challenges on his own but I realized that humans are social animals and it is natural to get help from people who can provide you with that help. Asking for help and guidance is also a strategy I use when faced with a new challenge. I will use this in navigating NYUSPS because it will definitely be challenging working full time and focusing on academics. I will go to Korean private tutor lessons to excel in the courses from NYU SPS. There will be difficult courses, I will not give up, I will reach out for help and do my best to excel. An example of a time when I overcame this challenge was when I began to overlook the family company at such a young age. I was not ready, I was just an adolescent who wanted to hang with friends. However, my situation did not reflect what I wanted. Hence, when my uncles discouraged my ability to overlook the company, I reached out to people who worked and were still loyal to my father for guidance and help. Keeping client relationship in Asia requires mutual respect for each other, trade partners from the past had respect and trust with my father, not me. In order to solve this problem, I asked the people I reached out to about the kind of relationship they had with my father and how I can best mirror my father’s representation.
