Assignment Description:

In the academic discipline Communication Studies course, Public Speaking, we learned to build a variety of public speeches. We listened, discussed, and evaluated numerous speeches on a variety of topics in many areas of life, ideas, experiences, and other academic disciplines. Now it is your turn to evaluate in a new situation a professional speech from TED Talks. The contexts of TED Talks are influential videos from expert speakers across disciplines. By making connections and transferring what you learned in building the form & content of a public speech to building content as in the academic discipline, English, create an essay. You will evaluate a speech by choosing from a broad choice of academic disciplines.

Speech Choice: Choose (1) one of the following professional speeches from TED Talks to analyze and evaluate. Search for your choice at https://www.ted.com/talks.

Assignment Requirements: POST THIS ON THE DISCUSSION BOARD UNDER THE FINAL ASSIGNMENT THREAD

1. Apply your learning of creating an introduction, body, and conclusion for a public speech to writing an essay with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Remember the body is built from main points and supporting points and should have (3) three or more paragraphs.

2. Your minimum 2-page paper should be typed in 12 pt. font and double-spaced. Remember one page equals 22 lines.

3. In your introduction (1 paragraph), the thesis should reflect if the speaker and the speech are effective or ineffective.

4. One section perhaps requiring (2 paragraphs) of the body of your paper should apply public speaking theories and delivery methodologies to the speaker, speech, and delivery including: (1) patterns of organization & use of transitions/signposts for informative/persuasive speeches; (2) research & supporting materials for content; (3) vocal & physical elements for effective delivery; (4) language usage; (5) general logic, credibility, and relationship of the speaker with his/her subject matter and audience.

5. Another section perhaps also requiring (2 paragraphs) body of your paper should demonstrate insights you learned from the speaker, content, delivery, and audience-relationship or from this speech analysis paper assignment. For example, how did public speaking writing compare and/or contrast to essay writing? As another example, how can you connect and/or compare the perspective of the speaker’s expertise to any other field of study or life experience? In other words, how does the speaker’s perspectives, knowledge & skills affect others who hear or watch the speech?

6. The conclusion of your paper should be a reflection and self-assessment where you draw some conclusions from the assignment and your connection to the experience of critically listening to the speech. For example, what was relevant to you as a developing learner? How did you grow from the speaker’s academic discipline? As another example, explore the significance of the speech and possible consequences it could have on you, society, or the world. Specifically, discuss how the academic discipline of the speech demands connections to other disciplinary perspectives, knowledge, and skills in the name of collaboration to truly have the speaker’s thesis fully developed as a reality. In addition, examine how your own skills, knowledge, and/or growth have guided you for future practice of public speaking and/or for further learning.
