This assignment is a virtual “date” assignment. Depending on your relationships, you can spend time with someone that is part of your family unit (I DO NOT WANT YOU TO BREAK SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TO COMPLETE THIS! If you are in a relationship, your assignment is to go on a “date” for at least an hour and a half (you do not need to spend money but you do need to be free from distractions and really focus on your partner). If you have children and cannot get away then you need to plan this “date” after the kids go up to bed and dedicate the time to your relationship. The key is NO TV, cellphones or computers– just conversation. So often people in relationships get into a rut and have a hard time getting out of it. Instead of a date night, people spend time watching TV and interacting very little– The point of this assignment to talk about anything and everything, discuss important aspects of life and try to focus on your specific relationship rather than others (such as family, friend, children etc).
If you are not in a specific relationship or you are unable to plan a date with a specific person, select ANY person you have not seen in a while and ask them to either zoom, FaceTime or simply talk on the phone. The main point is to focus on this relationship and building it up. For example, if you have not seen your brother/ sister/ child /friend, etc., you can ask this person to spend some time with you. Use this time to catch up, talk about what has been happening, etc. You can skype, or call the person and dedicate at least 45 minutes to having a conversation. You need to do this in the next week and do a 1-2 page write up on how the “date” went and what you learned by doing this. Just so you know, realistically speaking you could fake this assignment and do a write up and I would probably not know the difference (or couldn’t prove it :-)) but I have to say that over the years, people who have done this assignment have found it very gratifying and many have implemented it in their week or monthly plans. This is worth 1% on your overall grade (15 points extra credit)
