1. Topic Proposal 2. Your proposed title ( You have to Chose a topic ) 3. Main Essay 4. 100% Plagiarism Free TOPIC chose 1. The topic you have chosen. 2. An outline of the main questions you plan to address with a few full sentences for each. 3. A list of at least three well-researched sources you will use to support your discussion. You can use journal or magazine articles, well-researched podcasts (You know how I love podcasts!), websites, books, newspaper articles, videos supported by research or made by researchers, etc. You’ll need six items for the full paper, but it’s OK if you haven’t found them all yet. Note: Be sure to pay close attention to and to describe the social informatics dimensions of the issues that you are discussing. Do not just describe a type of technology. If you have any questions about choosing a topic, please let me know as soon as possible. – Topic Proposal ( 1 page with 3 well-researched sources) Introduction The final deliverable for this course will be a research-supported opinion essay on a controversial current sociotechnical issue or about sociotechnical aspects of a new or emerging technology. The first step is to write a brief proposal to tell me about your plans for the essay. For the proposal, choose one of the sociotechnical topics from the list below: • The growing use of facial recognition technology in the U.S., or in China, or elsewhere. Consider questions such as: Is it a threat to individual privacy and/or security? Why or why not? Should it be regulated more at the local, national, or international level? Why or why not? • The California Consumer Privacy Act (the CCPA). Consider questions such as: What are the implications for technology designers? Or for those who work in information security? Is it likely to have positive or negative effects on users? On industry? • The development of increasingly accurate voice-to-tech algorithms. Consider questions such as: What are the related privacy and security issues? What about voice editing? It’s legal, but is it ethical? (For background, listen to: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/articles/breaking-news. You can use it as one of your sources, if you’d like to.) • Information systems that collect (and possibly act on) users’ biometric data. Consider questions such as: Who owns users’ biometric data? Should biometric data be regulated differently than other personal data, such as social security numbers? • Privacy and security issues related to the potential rise of edge computing. Consider questions such as: What are some of the legal issues related to edge computing? What are the related privacy and/or security issues? What are some of the related economic issues? • Social technologies that users use to police their communities, such a Nextdoor. Consider questions such as: Should police and other law enforcement be allowed to access data collected from these systems? Why or why not? • Social technologies and economic issues. Consider questions such as: How is the rise of social technologies changing how we do business? What are some of the recent developments the sharing economy, and what are some likely future developments? • Social media and politics. Consider questions such as: How has the use of social media impacted past elections? How might it impact future elections? In general, how is social media changing local, state, national, or international politics? Or, you could pick one particular election and discuss how information technology impacted it. • Your pick of a new or emerging technology. Describe the technology, then discuss the pros and cons for society of further developing the technology. That is, how is further development of the technology likely to impact people in the short term? In the longer term? Are these impacts likely to be better or worse for society than not developing the technology? Regardless of which topic you choose, keep in mind the ways we’ve been thinking about technology so far in the course and about how technology influences and is influenced by social behaviors. ****Regardless of which topic you choose, keep in mind the ways we’ve been thinking about technology and about how technology influences and is influenced by social behaviors. EASSY( 5page) For this Essay you will identify a current significant sociotechnical issue and write a paper explaining why it is a sociotechnical issue and some of the major questions related to it. (See the final essay proposal description for topic choices.) In your paper, be sure to include: • A title that communicates the topic/question that you are addressing. • A clear introduction that provides an overview of the main issues related to your topic. • A thoughtful discussion of why your topic is a sociotechnical topic. Focus on the social aspects, not technological details. How has the technology or topic you’re discussing affected society so far? How might it continue to affect society in the future? • A discussion of well-researched background materials that you read (or listened to or watched) that helped you to understand the issue you’ve chosen. In addition to summarizing these materials, you should use what you learned from them to analyze and explain your opinion on the issue, such as whether further development of a particular technology is on balance good or bad for society. • A strong summary and conclusion section making suggestions for future development in the area you’ve chosen to write about and clearly stating what you learned from your researching and writing about the topic. • References. List your references in APA, MLA, or Chicago Manual of Style. Tips for project success: • Include sections headings in your paper to help organize it, such as: introduction, social aspects of [your topic], potential benefits to society, potential harms to society, conclusion with future recommendations, and references. • Remember to provide a list of all references cited within the body of your essay. ****For full credit, you must use at least six reputable academic and/or professional references to support your arguments. You may use items assigned for class, items you find on your own, or a mixture.
