For this project, you will select a topic to conduct a Public Advocacy project. The purpose of this project is to develop and present a speech in front of the class at the end of the semester to advocate an action or attitude change for your audience in support of the topic of your choosing, along with a written copy of that speech. The information of your speech and the way it is eventually presented should emerge throughout the semester as we learn the concepts from the textbook on effective and meaningful public advocacy.
The topic and direction of your speech are your choice, but the subject and objective of your public advocacy project must be submitted on the day we discuss Chapter 4 (see schedule below). Once you select this topic, you may not change it later on, though you may adjust your specific objective (you may even switch sides as you learn more about the topic).
Your speech should not have any visual aids. You will come to the front of the class and give a speech, approximately 5 minutes.
5 minutes is a short speech. Your paper, described next, is much longer. Practice and time yourself. People who go long will be cut off early.
Focus on audience appeals and delivery technique. You will have more room to give detailed statistics, facts, and other information in the written version.
Be prepared! You may use cards or notes, but DO NOT READ YOUR SPEECH DIRECTLY for the entire time!
You will submit a paper version of your speech. The paper must be at least 5 full pages long and be submitted to the course website. Because of the length of the paper relative to the length of your speech, your paper will be much more detailed and specific than your speech. They should never be exactly the same.
The paper should be written as a speech, even though you will not deliver this version of it.
That means you can include informal elements—personal stories, rhetorical devices, etc—that would not normally be appropriate for an essay
That said, you must include references and citations in proper format (either APA or MLA)
You must include a references page/works cited page with your outside sources
YOU MAY NOT PLAGIARIZE YOURSELF (OR ANYONE ELSE). This means that you may not reuse, word-for-word, anything you have written in your homework assignments this semester. This does qualify as plagiarism. You may reuse your past work, of course (that’s the point of those assignments!) but you must re-write them.
