For this assignment you are tasked with writing a 1000-1250 word reflection based on Greed is Good. It is expected that your response will be clearly written and use APA style, format, and citation guidelines. It is not necessary for you to include a title page, abstract or references page. Furthermore, as this reflection targets specific works, in-text citations and references are also not necessary.
While there are seven questions, you are only required to answer four of them. You pick. 🙂
Begin each question with a boldface header with the title of the question (i.e. Question One or Question Five)
Balance the length of the responses. Each question should be answered in 250-500 words
Do not use in-text citations or a reference page
Shorter and more direct responses are better than long-winded, ambling ones
I have provided page numbers where the answers are located
Drawing from the text Greed is Good (Robinson and Murphy), provide a reflection on your choice of any four of the following questions (do not answer all of the questions):
The book Greed is Good argues that corporate crime and elite deviance is more of a threat to society than street crime. First, identify and define the three assumptions about the nature of American crime outlined by the authors (pages 4-6). Next, outline the differences between street crime and elite crimes, including the differences of cost in dollar amounts and lives lost (pages 6-12). Make sure your answer includes definitions of all terms from figure 1.4 (page 9).
In Greed is Good, the theory of institutional anomie by Messner and Rosenfeld is introduced (pages 25-30). In this theory Messner and Rosenfeld argue that the institutions of politics, economy, education, and the family must be aligned in order for society to function properly. In your opinion, using data from Greed is Good and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, how does maximization negatively affect the operation of these institutions in American society?
According to Robinson and Murphy, what is maximization (pages 32-42)? How does their theory of elite deviance build upon Merton’s theory of deviance and adaptation to anomic strain? Lastly, what is the relationship between maximization, greed, and elite deviance? In your answer, make sure to include a full description of all the theoretical models and relate them to real world data and events.
Robinson and Murphy emphasize the role of greed in the maximization process regarding elite deviance (pages 42-63). First, define three trends identified by Wade Rowland and explain their relationship to enabling elite deviance. Next, discuss how changing social and personal controls contribute to facilitating maximization. In your answer make sure to discuss deregulation, reward and punishment, loyalty, executive ideology, and opportunity.
How does fraud and deceptive advertising relate corporate deviance? First, define fraud and deceptive advertising (pages 69-92). Next, describe at least five ways how Enron employed fraud or deceptive advertising as part of its business practices. Finally, how do Robinson and Murphy relate fraud and deceptive advertising to contextual anomie and strain theory (pages 88-92)?
Robinson and Murphy emphasize that elite deviance results in a greater loss of life than street crime (pages 93-110). First, discuss three different types of corporate violence and provide real world examples for each. Secondly, relate the authors’ theory of maximization to your examples of corporate violence.
The authors of Greed is Good recommend two policy changes to lessen corporate deviance: social justice and crime prevention (pages 115-126). Define each of these solutions and how they would reduce maximization behaviors in corporate institutions. Finally, do you agree with these solutions? Why or why not?
