Research Paper Assignment – Length: 4 to 6 pages
Situation:
You have read about the argument strategy and the research process as you’ve worked your way through the materials in this course, so now you are ready to begin constructing an argument that includes your academic voice as well as that of others through your library database research. In writing an argument, we must stand on logical, structured evidence that attempts to convince the reader to accept an opinion, take some action, or do both; therefore, our goal is to present an argument essay in which the reader will accept our opinion or at least respect the points we make. We will also learn how to use research and MLA in-text citation correctly.
Instructions and Requirements:
Choosing a Topic:
Choose an approved topic.
Consider browsing the databases designed specifically for composition students who are writing research papers. They are available at the CCCC Library Online Resources page.
Please do not choose an off-limits topic. (See below.)
*****The Following Topics Are Off-Limits*****
Gun Control (All Discussions)
Capital Punishment (i.e., the Death Penalty)
Abortion
Creationism and/or Darwinism
Immigration
Smoking and/or e-cigarettes and or Vaping
Birth Control
Corporal Punishment (i.e., Spanking)
Why? The research paper vending market is saturated with papers on these topics, making the opportunity to plagiarize even easier. Theory on academic honesty holds that assigning fresh paper topics helps to prevent cheating.
Paper Content:
1. Three premises (points) to support your topic/position.
2. Counter-arguing a point from your opposition can satisfy a point: The purpose of your argument will determine the organization of your body paragraphs. To succeed in writing an argument essay, you must show that you understand and respect the opposing position as well as acknowledge its good points. Therefore, you need to acknowledge some of the opposing viewpoints in your essay, but remember to address the faults present in these arguments, hence convincing your reader that your position is better. You may insert a paragraph completely dedicated to your opposition or you may handle refutation of the opposing position throughout the essay.
3. Creative Title
4. Adequate Introduction: see the grading sheet
5. Body Paragraphs: development, coherence, unity (see the grading sheet)
6. Conclusion: Conclude in a manner that will sway the reader to your side. Depending on the argument, you might restate your position, summarize your main points, predict the consequences if your position does or does not prevail, or make an emotional appeal for support or action.
7. THREE Secondary Sources: (no more than FOUR): You are required to incorporate at least three (no more than four) secondary sources in this essay. These secondary sources should come from academic journals or educational and governmental websites. You should use the CCCC Library Databases to find them. You may use paraphrases, summaries, or direct quotations from these secondary sources when writing your paper. These notes should be cited with parenthetical citations in the text and link to a works cited page at the end of your paper.
8. Primary Source: *** Use of a primary source is optional; it is not required. It will not count as one of your minimum three academic sources noted above.***
Definition: The primary source can be a survey that you developed and conducted yourself. It can also appear in the form of a personal interview. In this instance, you will write a questionnaire and interview an expert in the field addressed in your paper.
Below is a list of other source types that you may use but will be counted as primary sources.
Encyclopedias
Anecdotal Evidence (first & secondhand personal experience)
Religious texts, such as the Bible, the Torah, and the Koran, books of the dead (Tibetan, Egyptian, etc.)
Personal Interview
A Study You Conducted Yourself
9. Works Cited: The Works Cited page is a separate page from your actual essay. Please refer to the chapters dealing with documentation in the MLA Handbook section of your Norton.
10. Narrow Your Topic: Some topics must be narrowed.
A good example is the topic of bullying. Many debates fall under this larger heading.
Here are a few: Should schools be more responsible for preventing bullying? Does verbal abuse constitute bullying and does it warrant punishments equivalent to those for physical bullying? Can we link bullying to suicide? What should the penalties for cyberbullying be?
As you can imagine, a 4 to 6-page paper that tries to tackle even two of these big questions will probably lead to a disorganized and shallow paper. Such a paper is not likely to receive a high score.
Subsequently, below you will find broad topics (such as bullying) with their more focused debates listed beneath them. If any of these topics interest you, please be sure to choose one of the debates listed under its heading as your paper focus. Doing so will result in a much better grade.
