Answer Questions from article.
1. What is a patriarchal hierarchy and what is an arbitrary-set hierarchy? How do patriarchal and arbitrary set hierarchies differ?
2. Please discuss the double jeopardy and subordinate male target hypotheses. A. What are these? B. what predictions does each make with regard to discrimination against males and females from subordinate groups? c. According to the authors, which hypothesis has the most evidence in support of it?
3. On page 52, the authors discuss Parental Investment Theory (Trivers, 1972). Please discuss how parental investment theory may give us insight into the types of discrimination engaged in by males (this is discussed in that same paragraph).
4. When the authors suggest on pages 53 and 54 that patriarchal hierarchy (patriarchy) is a form of intersexual competition whereas arbitrary-set hierarchy is a form of intra-sexual competition, what do they mean by this?
5. The authors contend that sexism is not primarily an act of aggression but an act of control, whereas ethnic and racial discrimination is more aggressive in nature. Please explain what the authors mean by this.
6. Many times those who have political opinions favoring capital punishment (i.e., the death penalty) are also pro-choice (i.e., they think that women should have the right to have an abortion). By contrast, many who are in favor of capital punishment are also pro-life (i.e., they want to make abortion illegal).
This seeming paradox (logical contradiction) has been perplexing to many because if a pro-life stance is based on respect for human life, one would expect pro-life people to be against capital punishment, as this is the taking of human life.
Question: Can the different motives underlying patriarchal and arbitrary set discrimination discussed in this reading help us to better understand pro-life people’s seemingly contradictory pro-capital punishment stance?
Please note that saying that abortion concerns the taking of “innocent life” is not relevant to the question being asked here.
