ENGLISH 101 – FINAL RESEARCH ESSAYObjectives:Develop a logical, educated opinion on the topic based on your research.Write a persuasive essay that attempts to “answer” your research questionUse correct MLA format to incorporate and document sources, avoiding plagiarism.Purpose: Once you have completed all your research, you will evaluate and synthesize what you have discovered so that you can determine your own unique position on the topic. In other words, you will develop an opinion based on the “big picture” view you now have of the topic. Your purpose is to offer a solid, well-reasoned argument that will be convincing to your audience. Your argument should, in essence, “answer” your research question.Sources:You must have at least five sources. Your sources should be broken down as follows:At least two academic sources – articles from scholarly journals.No more than a few credible websites. Use these sources for primary sources of information, such as a government website for statistics, etc. Do not use the open web for secondary sources.You can use more than five sources, so feel free to use the variety of sources available to you – magazines, newspapers, movies, multimedia sources, interviews, etc.Any statistics you provide must come from primary sources. Do not provide statistics from secondary sources, such as magazine or newspaper articles.Remember that your sources shall serve as support, and your research is not the focus of the essay. Your opinion is, and you use your research to demonstrate to your reader why you have arrived at the opinion you present. Thus,information from your sources should not be more than about 30-35% of your essay. Other Specs:7 pages, typed, MLA format (Minimum 2100 words)A works cited page at the end, which does not count toward the page minimum or word countThe paper must be written on the topic from your research question – the one I have approved. Though you will use only 5 sources in the essay, you will have looked at many more than five sources – closer to 15 or 20 or more – and will have an understanding of all sides of the issue.Your thesis cannot be a question or a fact. It must be opinion.Please do not try to argue “pros and cons” or both sides of the issue. Develop a clear opinion, state it at the end of the introduction paragraph, and defend it throughout the essay.At least one support paragraph should deal with an opposing viewpoint. You will use this paragraph to present the counterargument and then rebut it.
Audience: Your audience is an academic audience. This audience is not specialized, and you can assume that your audience has not done extensive research on the topic. However, your audience is also a skeptical audience, meaning it will be looking carefully at the relevance, currency, and credibility of your sources. Your audience will also not be convinced by emotional appeals and other logical fallacies.Tone: This essay must be professional and academic in tone. Grammar, spelling, and word choice are important so that you present yourself as a credible writer.
