goal of this assignment: To create a two-to-five-minute presentation on a topic of your choice within the period covered by History 310.
This assignment will require you to pick a theme in US history, do some research on it, pick a presentation tool that works for you, and create a presentation that you will submit online by 5/19/20. I expect this entire process will take you from 3 to 5.5 hours, depending on the time it takes you to do research and learn how to use the presentation tool.
Part 1 (approximately 5-10 minutes): Pick your topic from one of the following:
Culture and Fun (Think sports, fashion, music, etc.)
Work and Money
Race
Sex and Gender
California before 1877
Native Americans (pre-Columbian exchange)
Colonial New England
Colonial South
Revolution and Building a New Nation
Pre-Civil War South
Pre-Civil War North
Civil War
Reconstruction
Part 2 (approximately 1.5 to 3 hours): Do some research on your topic. In your presentation, you will want to cover the following topics:
general introduction of the history of this overall topic and why it’s important (broad and general is fine here)
one idea or ideology that was relevant to your topic and how it impacted US history
one influential item or material good that was relevant to your topic
one person or group who had a lot of influence on the US related to this topic (describe this person/group and how she/he/they influenced history — for a group, it could be an organization like a social movement or even a business or other type of group, so feel free to be creative)
one place that is representative of your topic (This should be a place that represents something for your topic and it could be big or small, specific or general… a plantation, a baseball field, a church, the Gettysburg battle site, or New York City.)
Find and use at least three sources.
Part 3 (0 to 30 minutes): Pick a presentation tool. The presentation tool can be as simple or as involved as you’d like. There are tools that can turn your presentation into an animated cartoon, tools that include simple text and images that you insert, and tools that can embed audio and video. I don’t expect you to be a graphic designer, but I do want you to introduce your decade clearly… and I want you to be able to comfortably use a presentation tool to create something. Have fun with this, but don’t spend too long learning a new tool. If you don’t have a “go-to” presentation tool that comes to mind, Check out these two links, read through them, and pick a couple to play with:

Part 4 (approximately 1 to 2 hours): Create your presentation. Make sure you cover all of the bullet points listed for research in part 2. If you want to cover more than one example of any of these issues, go for it. The presentation should be about two to five minutes for someone to go through it. You can be longer if you find you need the time on one of the issues. (You may feel you have more to say about one or two than the others. Go with what feels appropriate to you. I just don’t want a presentation that can be easily understood in one minute.) Please remember to cite your sources within the presentation or in a note when you submit it.
Grading Criteria:
Historical content: 15 points
Did you cover all of the bulleted themes listed in part 2?
Does the historical content reflect your own choices of what was important in that topic and is that evident within the presentation?
Does the historical content reflect a robust understanding of the themes of this course?
Creativity and form of the presentation: 10 points
Is this presentation thorough enough that it should require someone at least two minutes to go through it?
Does the presentation use media in a creative way? (This doesn’t have to look like it has been created by a professional media designer, but it should embed some visuals.)
Does the presentation include the 3+ sources you used — or did you include that in a note when you submitted it?
