Outline
Once you have brainstormed sufficient sub-points and details, begin to outline and write your speech, which should focus on 3-5 body points with supporting specifics for each.
Body Points
Refer back to the Job SAT Presentation to select a logical order for your body points:
Topic or Category Order
Time or Chronological Order
Cause and Effect
Reasons
Problem/Solution
Frame
Next, add a frame around your body points which unifies your speech as you did with your Job SAT Presentation.
THE INTRODUCTION – Attract the audience’s attention and set the tone. This hook or opening could be a series of questions, a quote, an anecdote or brief story, statistics, surprise, or a general statement that funnels down to a specific scope. Be creative and engaging.
THE TITLE – This statement signals the end of your introduction and the beginning of your speech. It could be a simple statement, something creative or even a question. Think of a slogan or catch-phrase that encapsulates the main idea and purpose of your entire speech. Notice that this title should come after your introduction.
THE PREVIEW – This briefly previews the main 3-5 body points of your speech. If you can’t identify these points, it’s a sure sign that you haven’t yet clustered your content around 3-5 main ideas in your speech. Now is the time to be sure the organization, logic and main points are clear, both to you and your audience.
TRANSITIONS – Add transitions between the preview and all main points in your body which highlight, signal and track back to your preview. Specifically, your preview should be followed by a transition that highlights and states your first body point; you should supply a transition at the end of your first body point which signals your second body point and so on. Each main idea or section in the body of your presentation, including the first, should have a clear transition that follows the same logical pattern that you previously defined in your preview.
THE SUMMARY – Similar to the preview, the summary briefly re-caps and re-states the main body points in your presentation. You can state them using synonyms or reword them so that the preview avoids using the same words, but it should follow the same organization and highlight the same main body points as your preview.
THE CONCLUSION – End with impact by tying in your introduction in a creative way and offering a final statement. Perhaps end with another quote, ask a different series of questions or answer those you asked in the intro, tell another brief story, refer back to the statistics used in the intro, comment upon them or offer more. An effective conclusion comes full circle and adds a book end or pay off for your audience. Remember, the last impression you make can be more lasting than the first!
