For this assignment your will be focusing on only two of the Elements of Music; Texture & Form.
Selected any song (different than your Song Analysis) Chapters 12-13 and provide a Second by Second description of the song.
Describe what is happening in the texture and form of the song.
The texture includes instruments and voices in the song. Listen for different instruments and when they enter. Describe the voices and when they enter.
The easiest way to organize your analysis is using time line;
Example one:
0:00 – 0:30 – Describe what you hear as you are hearing it. What instruments do you hear and when do they enter?
0:31 – 0:37 – Note the entrance of instruments and voices, and significant aspects of the song.
0:38 – 1:24 – Seconds can any amount of time.

Texture & Form Analysis #2
For my second texture and form analysis I have gone with the song “The Long To Be
(Close To You)” by Carpenters from 1970.
00:00 – Melodic instrumental introduction begins.
00:06 – The melody doubles and another instrument can be heard playing secondary notes.
00:10 – Karen Carpenter’s soft voice can be heard as the song begins and she starts off with the
bridge. Her words calm and relaxing as she keeps the same tone. Piano can be heard in
the background.
00:34-00:53 – Speed and tone change. The song begins to pick up as a new verse begins. Soft
beats from a drum set begin and continue with a steady and thumping beat
00:54-01:15 – Bass begins as song’s speed increases along with Karen’s lyrics. A wind
instrument starts for this verse and follows with piano and drums.
01:19 – Drums are louder and backup singers begin to echo Karen’s words as she goes into
bridge
01:38 – Trumpet solo imitates bridge, no vocals
02:00 – Verse 2 is repeated, same picked up speed and tone change.
02:20-02:51 – Song slows again, back to soft monotone-like voice. Backup vocals accentuate
lyrics. Segways into second part of bridge.
02:51-03:44 – Piano and drums grows louder. Backup vocalists overtake Karen.
Example two:
That will be the day – Buddy Holly and the crickets
0:00 – 0:02 A small guitar intro starts the song off and repeats the same chord twice
0:03-0:05 Then goes to a slight pause as Buddy Holly sings “WELL” when along comes extra vocalist singing with Buddy “THAT WILL BE THE
DAY” while re-entering the guitar along with another guitar and heavy instruments such as the bass of the cello and the symbols of the drum making
a kind of rattle sound.
0:06-0:14 Buddy continues with the rest of his lyrics using the same cadence as the first line while the backup vocalist harmonize “AH” to give the
song a well-rounded feel.
0:15-0:18 Then approaches another pause of the instruments after the word “CAUSE” dramatizing the acapella lyric “THAT WILL BE THE DAY”
then the vocalist come back in to harmonize the line “WHEN I DIE”.
0:19- 0:29 Buddy goes back to the word “WELL” the instruments follow into the same beat as the first verse but this time Boddy Holly is adlibbing
the words on this verse and changing his own rhythm by popping and pausing his voice.
0:30-0:35 On “STILL YOU” is the same as the of the beginning of the song but during the word “MAYBE” the instruments stop the chucking like
pauses and play together repeatedly in a fast pace for anticipation of the slide into lower key Buddy sing for the lyric “WELL I’LL BE BLUE”
0:36-0:50 Not even a second after Buddy uses the word “WELL” to pick the same tempo and key back up to the chorus.
0:51-0:56 A single string guitar solo repeats 3x before a second guitar comes in to add to the guitar solo ending
0:57-1:00 Now enters a bass cello chucking along with the drums and symbols
1:01- 1:04 The symbols are now silenced leaving the drums and cello making a kind of muffled sound 1:05 -1:10 The guitar rejoins the cello and
drums to conclude the instrumental
1:11-1:33 The singer leads back chorus and the same texture as the previous verses
1:34 – A short drum solo (bud-duh-dum)
1:35-1:37 Buddy sings different words for this verse with the same cadence
1:38- 1:40 again the instruments pick up the pace and repeat together for the lyric “WELL I’LL BE BLUE” which is no longer in a lower key but in a
slightly higher one
1:41- 1:47 The long note on the word “WELL” Buddy sings brings the song back to the chorus once again
1:48- 1:49 – The slowed down hard and heavy banging of the drums complements the staccato on the words “WHEN/ YOU/ MAKE/ ME/ CRY-
HY”
1:50- 1:53 Tempo picks right back where he left off on the word “YOU”
1:54-1:57 Instruments stop Buddy sings “ CAUSE THAT WILL BE THE DAY” extra vocalist joins him for “WHEN I DIE”
1:58-2:09 Buddy sings repeatedly “THAT WILL BE THE DAY…OOH OOH” while the backup vocalist are softly adding “OOHS/AHS”
2:10–2:17 Guitar solos into a slower tempo for the other instruments to follow with a drum roll and loud thud bringing the song to an end
