2. Why do scholars uphold that civil wars during the Cold War differed so much from civil wars after the Cold War? What aspects of civil war, in terms of why and how they have been fought, changed from the time of the Cold War to the modern era?

3. Explain the concept and different types of “sovereignty.” What are the implications of sovereignty for how international affairs are carried out and for how weak states and non-state entities interact and survive in the international system.

Suppose that an international aid group randomly selected a subsistence village (i.e. one that is overwhelmingly dependent on farming) with low literacy and high mortality rates to implement a development program that consists of a new educational curriculum, a family planning clinic, and a shoe-making factory. Explain the type of political and sociological changes that are likely to be brought about by a development program of this nature. What are some of the positive and negative outcomes that could result in terms of wealth disparities, gender relations, personal security, and other aspects of the community?
