Requirements for Essay 4
Essay 4 must follow the topic assigned and follow the prescribed structure as outlined below, with a works cited list of at least FOUR outside sources gathered individually and using class collaboration lists.
This is a researched, critical argument essay in which you state the problem of “the Salton Sea: Environmental Crisis and Solutions,” take a position on what course of action/s you feel is/are best to resolve to the problems, and lead readers through an adequate development, using your outside sources, of what is the best course of action to resolve the environmental crisis posed by the Salton Sea’s ongoing shrinkage.
I must see evidence of quotes, statistics, materials from ALL four of the sources you identify. You can use more than this if you’d like.
You’ll need to also provide development and background on the features of the Salton Sea, and help your audience become familiar with this amazing, iconic natural landmark in our Coachella Valley/Imperial County region.
There are many published works that give tons of information and background on the Salton Sea, and also a lot of research that’s been done by scientists and environmentalists on what the Sea’s current problems are, and what solutions to the crisis are possible.
Your main job as a writer for this essay is to read up, learn, and come to a position of how to best solve the crisis that you defend in your essay through examples provided in your outside references.
It is okay to use all internet sources for your research.
There will be a “Essay 4 Discussion” thread on the discussion board that includes many websites (many also included on this post) about the Salton Sea that I’ll provide and also gathered by everyone in class, so you will have a lot of support in your research.
Be sure to use proper MLA format for your essay, including in-text citations of all quotes and references you make, and your works cited list.
Remember to follow the paragraph-by-paragraph breakdown of how I want you to structure your essay, and as always, your thesis statement and topic sentences should be underlined.
Please note that Essay 4 is worth 200 POINTS, SO IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO TURN THIS IN.

I am required to turn in grades for the course quite quickly after so it’s essential that you turn this essay (and all outstanding coursework) in on time or you won’t receive credit for it.

Be sure to follow this structure I’ve provided. You are welcome to add more body paragraphs if you need to, but your intro and conclusion paragraphs should be just one paragraph each.
In addition, please follow the MLA guidelines for formatting your paper, quoting outside sources, and preparing your works cited list.

PARAGRAPH 1: Introduction
A creative hook pulling reader into your topic/position; an underlined, one-sentence thesis statement that provides an overview & definition of the topic/position you are writing about; and a brief overview of the support ideas you’ll be providing in your essay.
In your introduction, you need to give your readers a reason to CARE about the Salton Sea crisis, and WHY it matters to them, and all of us.
PARAGRAPH 2: Background
A Background of the Salton Sea: Its history, stories, before the environmental crisis set in. (You can add in an extra paragraph if you’d like to develop this background information more thoroughly; this section should be 1-2 paragraphs .)
PARAGRAPHS 3-6: The Problems
An overview of the current environmental crisis at the Salton Sea in the year 2016, and how, why and when this came to be.
This paragraph should give an overview of the details you’ll develop in the next few paragraphs, including problem #1 (health issues for humans); problem #2 (environmental disaster for the sea itself); and any other problems that affect the Sea, its surroundings, its animal and plant life, and humans in the immediate vicinity and So Cal from now into upcoming years.
PARAGRAPHS 7-9: The Possible Solutions
Possible solutions to this crisis suggested by the various sources you’ve read, and how these might work.
PARAGRAPH 10: Your Final Thoughts & Recommendations
Solution/s to the crisis that you most recommend; final thoughts on the issue/crisis, and where you feel things could/should go from here in relation to the Salton Sea.
