Background and Task:
American schools operate within a complex world, a world replete with differing social, political, and economic values and interests that provide direction for our schools. This has led to a seemingly endless debates about the purposes of American education. To engage in a public debate about the desirability of alternative goals of schooling, you have the opportunity to voice your perspectives by writing a letter to the editor of an online newspaper – yes, first person format is fine. To promote an informed, evidence-based public forum, all letters must incorporate evidence on historical debates over the role of public schooling and the role of the teacher. This letter will be publicly shared through social media, online newspaper publication, online blog, or informal sharing with a member of the community.
Your task in this letter is to present and substantiate your position (through citing research and examples)  in response to the following question:
What do you see as the most relevant and important purpose of schooling in contemporary American society? How does that purpose compare (or contrast) to historic debates and perspectives over the role of public schooling and role of teachers in the U.S.?
Simply put, what did we think and do to promote that purpose (for both the institution of schooling AND teachers) historically versus today? Is that purpose still relevant – now more than ever?
You must use course concepts when presenting your position and analyzing the debate.
You will be evaluated on your demonstration of the following (each on a 1-5 scale):
Your letter should briefly define personal values and beliefs in relation to the historical and contemporary debates over the role of public schooling in American society.
Your letter should further define personal values and beliefs in relation to the historical and contemporary debates over the role of teachers in American society, indicating a recognition of ethical and professional responsibilities in the teaching profession.
Your letter should illustrate ethical reasoning with evidence (citations) from course materials and properly cited independent research. What about sources? The primary source should be our course textbook. Additionally, you should expect to use three additional  sources for the assignment to connect and extend knowledge. So, at least one of the sources must be a peer-reviewed research publication and at least one should be the course text. The remaining two sources can be any additional class content, such as lecture slides, videos, class notes, discussions, and activities. Your letter should effectively communicate ideas and information to diverse audiences (civic engagement) with appropriate writing skill, style, level of abstraction, and APA citation mechanics. The letter should be addressed to the intended community audience.
Length: 1250 words, not including references. Papers that do not meet the proper word count will not be graded and will be considered late/incomplete submissions.
