Part 1: Utilizing material outlined in “Course Lesson 1: Writing…” please provide comment and analysis on how Anne Lamott would likely respond to the concept of the “Inspired Writer vs the Real Writer.” In this portion of your respond, be sure to address specific instances from the first section of Bird by Bird to support your approximation.
Part 2: In the chapter, Perfectionism, Lamott cites the concept and pursuit of perfectionism to be destructive. She says perfectionism “block[s] inventiveness and playfullness and life force (Lamott 28). In this portion of your response, provide a self-reflective response to how you feel about her opinions of perfection. For instance, do you feel that the pursuit of perfection is destructive, or do you feel that a pursuit of perfection helps us to grow closer to an objective level of “good?” In your response, cite specific examples from your academic and/or professional experience as well as examples from the text.
Part 3: The last few chapters of the first section of Bird by Bird focus on refinement, decluttering, and knowing when to call something “done.” I happen to think the lessons Lamott teaches in these chapters are transferable across subjects and disciplines. Struggle is something all writers experience as they journey toward the finish line (whatever and wherever that is). In this portion of your response, use Lamott’s commentary and advice in these last chapters of the first section as support for how you treat your writing journey. What do you do when you struggle? What are some steps you take to cope with your frustrations? Most importantly, when do you call a piece of writing “done?” Be sure to cite specific examples from the text as well as from your writing experience.
After reading the first section of Bird by Bird (pages 3-94), please respond to the 3-part discussion question below. Students must post their own responses first prior to being able to review and respond to other students’ posts and responses. Your post must be a total of at least 500 words. Provide evidence and text citations for your responses.
