Hugo Cabret is a 12-year -old orphan. Hugo is being invented through his dreams and other elements that make him special. His dream of fixing clocks and mechanical parts just like his father. Once Hugo’s father passed, Hugo was left with a treasured notebook, drawings, an automaton, memories, and the dream to be a magician. The automaton was Hugo’s focus after losing his notebook because he believed there was a hidden message from his father. “The man was built entirely out of clockworks and fine machinery. From the very moment his father had told him about it, the mechanical man had become the center of Hugo’s life” (Selznick, 2007, p. 114). Hugo’s father died trapped in the attic of the museum where a fire broke out. The automaton was important to many people and had a huge positive impact on many lives. There was a story behind the automaton for Hugo, Isabelle, Hugo’s father, Georges Melies, Jeanne Melies, Etienne, and Monsieur Tabard.
After the death of his father, Hugo went to live with his only living relative, Uncle Claude. “You’ll be my apprentice,” he vaguely heard his uncle saying as they walked. You’ll live in the station with me, and I will show you how to take care of the clocks. ‘Apprentice Timekeeper.’ It’s a good title for a boy” (Selznick, 2007, pp. 124-125). Uncle Claude would leave for moments at a time, making Hugo responsible for himself. Until one day, when Uncle Claude did not return, and everything changed for Hugo. Hugo became scared because he was all alone.
Even though Hugo was scared, he became wise. He needed to survive; therefore, he would steal food and milk when he needed to. He kept the clocks working in the train station to keep his room within the walls. As Hugo spent more time with Isabelle, their relationship started to develop and trust started to develop as well. Hugo no longer relied on his notebook left behind by his father. Hugo was determined to find out the story behind the message, the drawing of the automaton. As the story started to unfold, Hugo grew strong relationships with everyone, now having a family and friends. “Once upon a time, I was a boy named Hugo Cabret, and I desperately believed that a broken automaton would save my life. Now that my cocoon has fallen away and I have emerged as a musician named Professor Alcofrisbas, I can look back and see that I was right. The automaton my father discovered did save me” (Selznick, 2007, pp. 509-510).
Isabelle’s character changed very little. She started by trying to help Hugo get his notebook back. But because Hugo did not want to tell her the importance behind the notebook, she would hold back information. Once Hugo showed her trust, Isabelle did the same. Together her and Hugo helped Jeanne and Georges Melies remember their hard work and dreams were loved by many.
Georges Melies character changed a lot. As a reader, I knew there was a story behind his long face and his toy booth. Georges parents were shoemakers and he hated shoes. Because of his hate for the shoes, he learned how to fix machines. “So when I was finally old enough I sold my share of the factory and bought a magic theater. My wife was my assistant. We were very happy. I had a special workroom in the back where I built my automaton, and my audiences loved him” (Selznick, 2007, p. 404-405). “I made hundreds of movies, and we thought it would never end. How could it? But the war came, and afterward there was too much competition, and everything was lost. I hated telling my employees that I could not support them anymore. And just when I thought it could not get any worse, two of my dearest friends, a young cameraman and his wife, were killed in a terrible car accident. But their baby survived” (Selznick, 2007, p. 405). After thinking everything was forgotten, Georges was reminded of all the love and support he had and how his work touched many lives making memories. Georges was only unhappy because working to make a living from his toy booth reminded him every day of his parent’s shoe factory. He had to listen to the sound of people walking throughout the train station. From words Georges told a little boy years ago, was a cherished memory which lead to Monsieur Tabard having faith and believing in his dreams. Georges character changed into his old, happy self when he was reminded his work and dreams were still important. He was able to live his dream again.

Hugo fixing the broken mouse: This illustration shows Hugo’s hair is not brushed and long. Hugo’s sleeves to his long sleeve shirt and jacket are ripped and worn which is shown in the pencil work of the illustrator. Brian Selznick draws heavy making the lines around his wrist look harsh and emphasis on the dull material of Hugo’s sleeve. The material looks to be stretched and loose around the wrist. The design element uses line.

Hugo’s new look and smile: Brian Selznick’s choice of media by using soft pencil on Hugo’s face, shows a clean and soft finish to his appearance. The realism of style is used to portray how Hugo is feeling by his expression. The small shaded areas at the ends of his lip, represents dimples, for his smile.
