You will write a research paper (4-6 pages) that evaluates how the political, economic, social and/or cultural aspects of youth in your country have been influenced by historic events. Upload your paper to the D2L dropbox by Thursday, April 30th (If you need extra time, please let me know.)
Since most Middle Eastern countries have a “youth bulge,” (i.e., the majority of their respective populations are under 25 years old), understanding the factors that impact young people is key to understanding broader dynamics. To do so, you will write a research paper about youth in a specific country in the Middle East that utilizes secondary sources to help you analyze primary source data (news articles).
First, choose a country (or entity) on the Google doc below and enter your name next to the country you want to write about. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fr1r5vjDxTT4N6MMZv6ATzhxGVEh0zu0hK9OlkbG2_g/edit?usp=sharing
Second, collect at least five news articles (published in 2019 or 2020) about aspects of youth and youth culture in your country.
Third, synthesize the information you’ve collected from the news articles and from relevant secondary sources.
Fourth, write a research paper (4-6 pages) that evaluates how the political, economic, social, or and/or cultural aspects of youth in your country have been influenced by historic events. Your paper should answer the following questions:
What is important to understand about the conditions of youth in your country, and what two or three historic factors do you think have affected their conditions?
This is persuasive essay in which you have a clear, specific argument that you are making and defending. In other words, there is no one answer to this question. You will need to decide what factors YOU think are most important, state them clearly in your thesis statement, then provide evidence to support your claims.
In thinking about how you will write your paper, you may want to consider the following questions:
What are some of the major events of the post-independence era that have affected the current condition of your country?
What are some of the major concerns of the youth in your country?
What do cultural expressions (hip-hop, etc.) tell us about the youth of your country?
What similarities and/or differences do you notice with youth culture in the United States?

Sources for coverage of youth and youth culture include:

Search www.news.google.com using keywords such as “Algerian youth,” “young Sudanese,” “Lebanon protests,” etc.
And don’t forget about social media! YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook all have accounts by individuals and groups that are relevant.
For relevant demographic statistics, look up your country at:

For historical information, be sure to read carefully the relevant passages in your Anderson textbook. Then, consult the Bibliography at the back of the Anderson book and check out the books/articles that seem most relevant.
NOTE: While Wikipedia is often the first place people turn to in order to learn about a new topic, DO NOT RELY it for your accurate information for your report. Experts find a wide array of inaccuracies and omissions in Wikipedia entries, and despite its claims of neutrality, politically biased statements can be found throughout.
Logistics:
Format: Times New Roman 12 font, double-spaced, one-inch margins all around, no cover page
Citations: MLA in-text citation style; include a properly formatted Works Cited page
Sources: At least four news sources that discuss youth in your country, AND at least two scholarly sources (including the Anderson textbook).
Helpful Hints:
Write an outline of your paper. Make sure that you have an introductory paragraph, a clear thesis, evidence supporting your thesis, and a conclusion that summarizes your thesis.
State your thesis up front (no later than the bottom of the first paragraph). You don’t have space for a lengthy introduction and background. You need to get to the point quickly.
Be sure you have an arguable thesis. It should read something like: “The current situation of youth [protests, unemployment, organization, social media activity, etc.] in [country] can be attributed in part to [a], [b], and [c].
Be sure to include a title, ideally one that reflects your thesis argument.
Be sure to proofread your work.
