Part 1- Select Topic and Brief Proposal
In order to understand communicable& non-communicable diseases and health issues, it is important to apply information relating to the nature of the disease, historical and contemporary importance, social implications of infection, legislative actions and the development and implication of effective methods of treatment. The purpose of the research paper is to allow you to synthesize research about the particular communicable or non-communicable disease topic as described above. The specific steps are given below.
• Choose a Disease-related topic: ALL persons ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT AN ORIGINAL RESEARCH PAPER…Minimum 5 pages must include Title Page and Reference Page
o Others.. as approved by the instructor (E.G., LOOK FOR NEWSWORTHY TOPICS THAT YOUR ARE INTERESTED IN.) FIND LITERATURE.. ** You may also combine topics….. You must get my approval ** BEFORE WRITING ON A TOPIC THAT IS COMBINED.
• Narrow your topic and consider what kind of information you need
o For example, if your chosen topic is “The Social and Legal Implications of Cervical Cancer,” you could focus on family issues, legal effects in your community or city.
o You then need to think about focusing on prevention, coping, or treatment
o How you narrow your topic dictates what key words you need to search the literature – and what you find in the literature may help you narrow your topic. (review overall course description)
• Conduct library research
o Your paper must include at least 5 primary & and scholarly references (i.e., not textbooks, not popular magazine articles, not the Web) and at least 1 secondary source (handbook, professional encyclopedia, etc.). o YOU MUST INCLUDE CITATIONS AND REFERENCES IN ACCORDANCE WITH APA STYLE OF REFERENCING.
o Focus on sources that help you understand (but not limited to these topics):
The nature of the topic or its definition
How this behavior or disease develops and important contributing factors (look for biological, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual factors)
Identify resources that are available for prevention and treatment
Identify resources that are available for prevention and treatment of disease-related problems. Current treatment or prevention approaches (e.g., cognitive or family therapy, drugs, exercise)
