Options are as follows
1.) Critically discuss the differences between subcultures and music scenes. Do subcultures still exist? Why or why not? Refer to scholarly texts and include musical examples to support your argument.
– Tip: Yes, you can take a position with this essay question (you can argue that they do or don’t exist) but you need to support your argument with evidence. Present what scholars have said about music scenes and subcultures (definitions etc) and discuss examples of music scenes/subcultures to substantiate your argument.
2.)Critically discuss the politics of race in Australian popular music. What issues arise when we try to identify a distinctly Australian sound? Refer to scholarly texts and include musical examples to support your argument.
– Tip: Be critical! Think about how Australian-ness is conceptualised and disseminated through music and consider the racial implications of this. Are there any biases? Whose version of Australia is being represented?
3.)Critically discuss the role of popular music in a film of your choosing. Your essay must refer to themes, concepts, and/or theories presented in class (for example, authenticity, gender, politics, subcultures/music scenes, stardom, race). Refer to scholarly texts to support your analysis.
– Tip: This question requires you to think critically about how music is used to communicate ideas, ideologies, concepts. Ask yourself: what is this film about and how is music being used to communicate this theme? Does it say something about society or ideologies (such as feminism, race, or gender)? Does it tell us something about the structure of the music industry (stardom) or the personality of a pop star/artist/band etc? You don’t need to cover everything we discuss in class. Choose the most obvious features/ideas presented in the film and discuss these in detail.
4.)Critically discuss why stardom is not simply an economic process. Your response must include scholarly sources on popular music and stardom. Include at least one or two case studies on the careers of specific artists.
– Tip: remember that stardom is qualitative rather than quantitative (Marshall, 2013a). Think about the star as a cultural text – what goes into making a star? How do audiences relate to stars? How do pop stars seek to connect with their audiences?
I’ll attach a few files which have issues/examples related to these topics that we have already discussed in our classes which I cannot use for my research essay.
So just go through those slides once and use the one’s that were not there in the slides already.
And there still 3 weeks of course left
so if any more slides come up
I”ll inform you there and then
no more slides are gonna come up for the subjects that I have posted the slides of
